A grieving California mom who, under pressure from an atheist group, went to the site where her son was killed to remove a memorial cross was met at the scene by a throng of supporters who planted crosses of their own.

“They said they have to take that one down,” Doug Johnson, a Riverside resident who traveled to the site with his daughter and six home-made crosses, told The Riverside Press-Enterprise. ”But they didn’t say anything about putting another one up.”

AnnMarie Devaney agreed to remove a 5-foot cross she put up on the side of a road in Lake Elsinore to honor her 19-year-old son Anthony, who was struck by a car and killed two years ago, the paper reported. The American Humanist Association in Washington, D.C., caught wind of the cross and sent her a demand letter dated March 4 calling for her to remove it. The association said that its placement on city property violates the constitutional separation of church and state.

“It’s so petty and sad that they have to complain over removing a cross,” she said. “It’s his personal preference that he was Christian. What’s wrong with having a cross up?”

Devaney was emotional when she was at the site and said she was moved by her supporters. She was joined by her family and other families that brought their own cross. A woman in attendance told the paper that she is the stepmother of the driver struck Devaney’s son as he crossed Lake Street near an exit ramp, the paper reported.

oh, I go past one every morning. Two kids minding their own biz got t-boned by a guy whose blood alc test got screwed up. The kids got put through a metal pole. A new cross and flowers is up every other month. I feel for those people. I'd want to touch the spot where my kid was at her last.

That is some strange tradition some people have started...I for one would not want to be reminded where my son had died every time I went by the place....but then, that's just my own feelings. So, obviously, they can't plant memorials at the exact spot, or we would have them all over the highways.

Doesn't the young man have a grave? That's the place for the cross.....if someone were to be killed in an accident in front of my home, and the relatives wanted to plant a cross in my yard, I certainly would not allow it....and I'm a Christian. There's a place for everything, and the site of the accident is not the place to remember someone just because they died near that spot.

The 1st amendment prohibits the government from endorsing any religion. A Christian symbol on government land is an endorsement of religion. To leave it there is a violation of the Constitution. Perhaps you can explain why you are not offended by violations of the Constitution.

If a private citizen puts up a temporary memorial for her dead kid I do not see that as government endorsement.

I see that as a woman grieving the loss of her son and don't see the harm in showing a little compassion.

So you would have no problem whatsoever if they installed a 75' cross on the front steps of your local courthouse as a memorial to someone who had died?

There are also a number of factors in roadside memorials that she ignored.

First, most states require that they be small crosses made of fairly light wood. Her's was 5' tall and had a 5 gal bucket filled with concrete as a base. Any idea how dangerous that memorial would become if there was an accident there? And judging by the quotes from other articles, it is not a very safe intersection.

Second, many states have strict rules concerning what is allowed on the right-of-way. We are all sorry this woman lost her son. But that does not change the fact that most of those rules were written because someone was hurt or someone died.
