NJ until last year had a Republican governor who did nothing to attempt to fix it. It is not as simple as you want to make it.

Republicans in the North, can be quite different.

My Pawling, NY is Republican, (My guess is 70% here are Republican, and 40% drive pick-up trucks)

Of course, Pawling, NY like most of NY has very high taxes, they voted for many school budgets to pass, they voted for library extensions, as well as they voted in a massive park district of Lakeside, and Murrow parks by the town / village of Pawling.
Heck, even in the village of Pawling, the garbage men, are hired to pick up trash on the side of the road as they walk collecting people's garbage.

I don't know why they consider themselves like Southern Republicans, exactly.

My guess is that they are very anti-abortion, very anti-illegal, anti-gay marriage, and so forth.

The funny thing is that NYC has lower taxes than us, in fact, perhaps a property tax about 1/3rd less than us, even though they vote way more Democratic.

But, NYC has a lot of business money flowing in, which allows them to cut taxes.

It depends really, Westchester, County, NY leads in total property taxes paid in numbers.

Yet, they have really good schools, good parks, and a lot of their kids go to college.

Might I add, Westchester, NY is mostly rich, and low crime although dragged down by a couple of cities like Yonkers, and Mount Vernon.

That is a very questionable report. NY is actually in the top 10 for funding their pension plans. Not that they are where they should be. Red states like Kentucky and SC are near the bottom in funding their pension plans. They do not have high taxes. NJ until last year had a Republican governor who did nothing to attempt to fix it. It is not as simple as you want to make it.

The article is somewhat misleading.

What matters isn't a state's total debt but the debt-to-GDP. Debt-to-GDP is highest for the following states

Those are actually pretty low. The province of Ontario has a debt-to-GDP of 37%. So there is still a lot of room for states to borrow.

However, the gist of the article is generally correct.

There is a pension crisis coming, probably next decade. There's a good chance that government workers aren't going to get everything they are promised. Maybe they'll get 80% or 90% of what they are promised.

But some states are in serious trouble, like Illinois and Kentucky, if they don't massively fund up their pension plans. It is likely that at some point, without big tax increases, many states will default on their pension obligations in 10-20 years.

My Pawling NY probably has the highest taxes in a 15 mile radius.

But, according to this we also have the best schools in a 15 mile radius.
