Dems Big Push for 2014: Minimum Wage

If you goofs can't see that there is a real problem when you have so many people trying to live on MW that there's a push to substantially bump it up and it gets real traction... and this coupled with never ending UI, 30% increases in food stamps, etc.

This is a long-running thread....could be combined with countless other MW treads.....the issue never gets old.

A small bump in MW has been demonstrated to have little economic impact on anyone: Employees and Employers......If the Soma keeps the hamburger-flippers, and other Epslons from Orwell's 1984 happy for a few years, then why not give it to them?

And that's exactly what's going to happen when the dust clears.

This issue has only been propagated into the limelight in order to distract the large numbers of registered votes living on minimum wage. If those same voters were informed of the attacks on the bill of rights being perpetrated by both parties there would be riots in the streets. Push the kiddies a bowl of cereal across the table while the adults discuss the children's' bed time.

Doubtful. One does not in any way cancel out the other. Apparently, you have no idea of the damage that is done over time by living in poverty, despite holding a full-time job.

Or two.

Democrats have to turn attention away from OscamCare so this is their next big crisis they have to create...

we've had one crisis after another since they took office 5 years ago...hasn't it been wonderful living under that historic President, Obambam and his comrades in arms the Democrat/progressive party?

Oh, agreed.. the differences lie in how you fix this... the left sees poverty as the problem, so, you just throw money at these people and the problem is fixed. Yet, that never works because you're not addressing why these people are poor. Why are people only able to get a job at McDonalds? Let's face it, these jobs are low/no skill jobs... the market determines what that position is worth and long as there is a never ending supply of semi-literate, government educated people, the pay will be very low... as it should be.

Usually when minimum is raised, it is raised by an amount that has very little effect on the economy. Most of the fast food and grocery store jobs already pay those that stick around more than a few weeks more than what the new minimum wage will be. The new minimum wage will still not be a "living wage" which means the democrats will be playing the same song again when the politics work for it.

If the minimum wage is such a good idea, then it should be raised to at least $20 per hour so that everyone that works will be making a living wage........Right?

For full time, that would be more than a living wage in most states. We can stop at the living wage. No need to exceed it.

Why? Why is that a living wage? You just want people to live? How about a thriving wage? How about a king's wage? All Americans are princes and deserve a princely wage. I think $50/hr should be start for all jobs.

Indeed.

What we really need is a solution. One that can enhance the pay of skilled workers whilst eliminating the unskilled, illiterate, and, let's just say it.........the stupid.

:eusa_eh:
Did someone ask what War was good for?

Sadly, we've advanced so far technologically that this is no longer a very effective answer: Shit even a decade of war only results in < 10,000 dead, and many of these aren't just spear-chuckers. No we need something else with which the vast unwashed hoards can occupy themselves.

More Cable TV.

Democrats have to turn attention away from OscamCare so this is their next big crisis they have to create...

we've had one crisis after another since they took office 5 years ago...hasn't it been wonderful living under that historic President, Obambam and his comrades in arms the Democrat/progressive party?

MW is not a partisan issue: Repubs have raised it too.

That the GOP has played boneheaded games is not proof of anything other than Republicans can be stupid too.
It is a partisan issue, pitting pro growth conservatives against anti growth statists.

Damn! You have outwitted me again! When are you going to take mercy on me?

At least you can admit the obvious.

Who the hell is unable to go to school?

Who the hell can't afford a free education?

No one, but that's only because we don't let the market decide who can or cannot afford school.

Government intervention in the so-called free market lets the poor get an education.

Is that unfair?

And the government has done so well in public education. :cuckoo:

Public education should be the responsibility of the state and not the feds.

The same with environmental, energy, healthcare, welfare issues etc.....

State governments are governments, fyi.

By "Partisan" I meant Party Politics.

Obviously the issue has conservative and liberal arguments, bu no political party has ever consistantly championed No MW.

Trying to pin the MW issue on the Democratic Party is as ridiculous as trying to pin racism to the Republican Party.

Can you list all the Democrats who have opposed raising it?

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/30/u...rn-to-minimum-wage-as-2014-strategy.html?_r=0

The effort to take advantage of growing populism among voters in both parties is being coordinated by officials from the White House, labor unions and liberal advocacy groups.

In a series of strategy meetings and conference calls among them in recent weeks, they have focused on two levels: an effort to raise the federal minimum wage, which will be pushed by President Obama and congressional leaders, and a campaign to place state-level minimum wage proposals on the ballot in states with hotly contested congressional races.

With polls showing widespread support for an increase in the $7.25-per-hour federal minimum wage among both Republican and Democratic voters, top Democrats see not only a wedge issue that they hope will place Republican candidates in a difficult position, but also a tool with which to enlarge the electorate in a nonpresidential election, when turnout among minorities and youths typically drops off.

“It puts Republicans on the wrong side of an important value issue when it comes to fairness,” said Dan Pfeiffer, the president’s senior adviser. “You can make a very strong case that this will be a helpful issue for Democrats in 2014. But the goal here is to actually get it done. That’s why the president put it on the agenda.”

That's certainly going to make the 2014 elections interesting.

Yippee!!! Bring on the stupid!

No, I'm really not going to trouble myself, but Republicans have raised the MW: Attempting to make every issue a partisan issue is necessary to simplify the world for those who have difficulty comprehending it.

Only 2% of people make minimum wage right now(most of whom are teens or have other income earners in the house), whereas millions will be affected by Obamacare.

Nice try.
