Employers could impose hefty penalties on employees who decline to participate in genetic testing as part of workplace wellness programs if a bill approved by a U.S. House committee this week becomes law.

In general, employers don't have that power under existing federal laws, which protect genetic privacy and nondiscrimination. But a bill passed Wednesday by the House Committee on Education and the Workforce would allow employers to get around those obstacles if the information is collected as part of a workplace wellness program.

Such programs — which offer workers a variety of carrots and sticks to monitor and improve their health, such as lowering cholesterol — have become increasingly popular with companies. Some offer discounts on health insurance to employees who complete health-risk assessments. Others might charge people more for smoking. Under the Affordable Care Act, employers are allowed to discount health insurance premiums by up to 30 percent — and in some cases 50 percent — for employees who voluntarily participate in a wellness program where they're required to meet certain health targets.

You need to get rid of every nitwit in the House. Make that a priority to pay attention to these clowns.

All the more reason government shouldn't be involved in insurance and medical care other than constitutionally limited overseer protecting the public.

Why is insurance even necessary?

Republicans are married to big business so why would this surprise anyone? It has been that way for over a hundred years, you'd think Americans would learn by now.

"Republicans approve of the American farmer, but they are willing to help him go broke. They stand four-square for the American home -but not for housing. They are strong for labor - but they are stronger for restricting labor's rights. They favor minimum wage - the smaller the minimum wage the better. They endorse educational opportunity for all - but they won't spend money for teachers or for schools. They think modern medical care and hospitals are fine - for people who can afford them. They consider electrical power a great blessing - but only when the private power companies get their rake-off. They think American standard of living is a fine thing - so long as it doesn't spread to all the people. And they admire of Government of the United States so much that they would like to buy it." Harry S. Truman

Guaranteed medical service is my guess.

It's a service good, not a right unless you earned it in my opinion.

If you want to gamble on your health that seems like a constitutional right to me.

Big business provides us with the gas and electricity that heats and lights our homes, it provides us with the cars we drive and the gasoline that powers those cars. It provides us with the telephones and computers we need to do our work and organize our personal lives. It provides our military with the weapons it needs to protect us and it gives us the medications and medical equipment we need when we are sick. Big business built the American economy that makes us viable as a nation. If Republicans are married to big business, then liberal/progressives are its spoiled, spiteful children who grab up everything they can reach and then complain some else may have more.

/---- What does Pres Trump have to do with this bill? He didn't propose it. It hasn't even been passed by the Senate/ Me thinks you just hate Trump and will blame him for things he has nothing to do with, just so you can spray your venom.

Ideologically, they are opposites, but in the mortar and pestle of democratic elections many of those differences are pounded away by voters until what emerges from most Republican governments is only slightly different from what the Democrats would have done.

Or none. Genetic testing is looking for predisposition to diseases, a carrier of a genetic mutation, protein or chromosome. How will that effect one's offspring?

How will that effect your career?

We have a country where the corporations and the government overlook the effects of pollution or deny the physical repercussions of a job and then force the population to pay twice.

You're making me think too much.. (it's good to be old sometimes..)

... and the best part is .. genetic manipulation is coming soon... :thewave: .. it will be sold/indoctrinated as necessary and become all the rage..

It looks like all those, "servers" need to be filled, all those people need to be categorized and before you know it, futures will be decided.. Luckily, no one is distracted...
