Oh, I do, indeed, blame Powell for his willingness to serve as the Bush mouthpiece in front of the UN, in stating our false casus belli....Yes, yes, now y’all love you some Colin Powell....I remember a time when you blamed him for getting us into Iraq.
It was a dishonorable thing to do, and it tarnished an otherwise honorable and well-conducted career of service to the Republic.
Powell did not "get us into Iraq" but he conspired alongside Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and others in Shrub's and Daddy's retinues, to finally finish Desert Storm.
But against that blind following of the chain-of-command we have to throw a lifetime of honorable and courageous service, which tip the scales in his favor.
Powell is a now-soiled public servant who screwed-up big time and cost American lives and treasure needlessly and unrighteously.
Not to mention all the innocent Iraqis who died alongside the not-so-innocent during that lightning war and its eventual prolonged initial 'peace'.
But...
What has that to do with his status as a courageous leader in-the-field in Vietnam or his insistence on not allowing long, meandering wars on his watch?
What has that to do with his George Marshall -like Hero status - alongside Norman Schwarzkopf - in the wake of their brilliant victory in Desert Storm?
What has that to do with Powell's lifelong commitment to Conservative values, both while in the Officer Corps and afterwards in Executive -level public service?
And on and on and on...
Powell probably backed Obumble on racial grounds... can't really blame him... it was historic... and Obama looked better than McCain or Romney anyway...
Powell backed Shrillary because he already knew how dangerous Rump would be to American representative democracy and to true Conservatism in the US...
Your objections concerning Iraq are both noted and well-founded... you and I are close to being on the same page on the basic assessment of blame...
But that is not an adequate 'defense' against the idea that a well-liked and trusted Conservative has once again chosen Honor over Disingenuous Autocracy.
