In only 10% of counties in the US can a worker afford a 2 bedroom apartment working 40 hours a week

99% of those jobs are not minimum wage jobs.

Actually, just over 97%

I am speaking of the open, unfilled positions. I doubt even 3% of them are minimum wage jobs. Even the fast food places here are paying more than minimum wage because of the fight for employees.

This too shall pass in the next 5 years. Fast food will go by the way of many manufacturing jobs to automation. It's already happening. And it's not the lack of workers or the higher pay, it's just the way things are. Like the Gas Stations.
/—-/ Full Service gas stations started dying out in the 1970s. I’m old enough to remember them. Whatever Happened to...Full Service Gas Stations? - Go Retro!

The beginning to the end was actually in the late 60s. We all thought it was just a fad.

It wasn't the end of anything ... people voted with their wallets ... they would take cheap self-serve over more expensive full-serve every time. It wasn't a government plan or social engineering ... it was the ever present invisible hand of the market (to quote Adam Smith).

still way below the cost of living needs for a person working 40 hours a week

So don't work for them.

No one forces anyone to take a job that doesn't support their needs. If you aren't making enough money at your job, change jobs or spend less.
Okay again this a matter of simple mathematics. If everyone took your advice, who would be left behind to fill those jobs?
But ...but.....where are the saviours of the workers......Unions????

True. Not sure if it will be in 5 years, but it is a problem. Eventually we will run out of new jobs to replace the ones automated away. I think that tipping point will be when driver-less cars are viable.

At some point, we are going to have to figure out what to do with the idle public. There won't be any jobs for them to do. Even the City Planners will be replaced. Construction Workers will no longer be needed. And a whole lot more. And it's going to happen in the next 20 years. We need to start facing this right now. Yes, it's not an immediate problem but if we don't start planning for it then.........

Can you imagine being paid to stay home? It gives a new meaning to Socialism, doesn't it.

Ways of keeping the idle mob distracted and entertained is hardly a new problem...

We can always bring back the Arenas. Make them Free. And it also cures the problem of the people that are hell bent in dying to work.

'A national problem': U.S. housing affordability is out of whack with minimum wage

Obviously this should bother republican voters, but they have this fantasy mindset that Trump will turn this country into some kind of utopia despite the fact that he had two years to do so with a republican Congress. Their only response when presented with this is the usual pathetic deflection of “well Obama didn’t do it! Derp, derp, derp!”

Now granted Obama achieved little in improving the lives of the middle class and poor besides a few policies. These policies include 1) helping to reverse the Great Recession he inherited from Bush 6 months into his presidency and producing job growth EVER SINCE. 2) Expanding OT pay eligibility for thousands of US workers 3) guaranteeing people receive healthcare from pre-existing conditions, 4) passing the biggest middle class tax cut since Reagan

He also TRIED to invest education and raise the minimum wage but was blocked by republicans.

The point I am making is that republicans do fucking NOTHING to help the poor and middle class but democrats at least make an attempt despite failing on a significant scale. This nuance matters whether you like it or not.

Now granted Obama achieved little in improving the lives of the middle class and poor besides a few policies.

These policies include

1) helping to reverse the Great Recession .

How???

.
. 2) Expanding OT pay eligibility for thousands of US workers .

Did not happen. Obama was too aggressive and his scheme failed.
And of course Unions were unhappy :(

Obama expanded overtime pay to 4 million workers. Now Trump is scaling that back.

.
3) guaranteeing people receive healthcare from pre-existing conditions,.

At, 'You CAN'T keep your doctor, you CAN'T keep your healthcare plan ... and my favorite, every household will SAVE $2,500.00 a year'
Obama LIED.

.
4) passing the biggest middle class tax cut since Reagan.

Obama extended Bush 'tax cuts',

The Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001 (EGTRRA) phased in income tax cuts for most taxpayers but scheduled all of the cuts to expire after 2010 to avoid conflict with Senate rules (Joint Committee on Taxation 2001).

The Jobs and Growth Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2003 accelerated the phase-in of some EGTRRA provisions, but retained their expiration dates and lowered tax rates on capital gains and qualifying dividends, also with sunset dates (Joint Committee on Taxation 2003).

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Tax Act of 2009 (Division B, Title I of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, or ARRA) provided a number of temporary tax cuts designed to stimulate the economy, all of which were to sunset by the end of 2010 (Altshuler et al. 2009).

The Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010 extended most provisions of those three acts through 2012 (Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center 2010).

What did the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 do?

.
....and raise the minimum wage but was blocked by republicans.

"President Barack Obama on Wednesday formally signed an executive order raising the pay for employees of federal contract workers..."

Do you see that Billy?

It was an EO.

Republicans were too SMART to buy into jumping from $7.25 to $10.10 an hour in Fed Min Wage. Obama set this up to fail because he KNEW Republicans wouldn't go for it.

I remember the first self service that came to town. It was just 3 pumps that took cash. No buildings, no oil, no service, nothing but 3 pumps. This was in the late 60s and there were NO self service islands in the service stations yet. But it was a glimpse at things to come.

The minimum wage is just that, a minimum.

There is no guarantee that anyone should be able to live in a large apartment on a low income.

A minimum wage worker can't afford an SL either, and might have to ride the freaking bus.

These folks are going to have to live with roommates or family until they command a higher wage.

Here's a little piece of economics that they teach in schools... called Supply and Demand. If there is no one around willing to take a job at a low wage, the wage increases.

This continues until a) the job becomes obsolete due to automation or it becomes obsolete because those who previously paid for the service no longer consider that job worth it.

At one time, a huge part of low end of the US labor force were employed domestics .

Automation and the adaptation of less pretentious lifestyles among the upper classes has significantly reduced that number.

Live-in, full time domestics have practically disappeared.

Maybe bringing in more millions of illegals will reduce housing costs, health care and increase wages. How about it?
Net migration from Mexico has been decreasing since 2008. There is no such thing as a border crisis unless you think any level of illegal immigration through out history was a crisis.

You dodged my points.

You want affordable housing and "living" wages while simultaneously supporting unlimited immigration, legal or otherwise, and you demand welfare for the 23 million illegals (and growing) that are here and everyone else that follows them here. Either you want the former or you want the latter but you cannot have both.
Forget explaining economics to Billy0.

True.

Republicans not only do nothing, but they couldn’t care less about the housing crisis.

False.

Democrats not only do nothing, but they couldn't care less about the housing crisis.

Example: San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Chicago, Detroit ...

What has the republican congress done for the 4 years of GOP maj in both the house and the senate. The GOP House for 8 years and we know where bills get started.

They don't call Mitch the Grim Reaper for nothing, he takes up no bill from the House since the Democrats took control in 2019.

None of them ran these cities:

San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Chicago, Detroit ...

There appears to be a housing shortage and that would explain why in my neck of the woods they are building houses like crazy. As the price of homes increase the FED is set to raise interested rates. People who can afford it want a new home.

I don't know if there is a "housing shortage" at all, there certainly is an increased demand for housing.

I looked at the 1940 US Census data for my previous home which was built during the Arthur Administration.

A thousand foot square home, housed 7 people. The home next door (which was razed in the 1990's) was identical and had 5 living in it.

People in America are demanding more space than ever, homes are getting bigger. But that doesn't mean that everyone with a job as a dishwasher or shoe shine boy should be living in a McMansion.

Again, (I can see you trumpets are avoiding this) name one major city that the Republicans successfully run.

more illegals/immigration = higher prices--lower wages...I've been saying this for a long time
--so it's the DEMS who cause this shit
....immigration/illegal capitals of the US = California and New York= most expensive to live in .... ..California bottom third in poverty
illegals by state:
pop_plot.png

most expensive to live in:
cheapest-states-in-america-for-2019.jpg

top immigration:
15 states with the highest share of immigrants in their population

Don't work for minimum wage... problem solved.
Well gee, that’s a brilliant solution. Okay so let’s pretend everyone did that despite such a thing being mathematically impossible. Who would be left behind to work those minimum wage jobs? I mean we are also talking about service jobs that pay more than minimum wage but still very much south of a live able wage.

the premise of your thread is flawed. Minimum wage is not for middle aged people raising a family. It is for teens working part time and people just starting out with no education or training. If you reach middle age and are still making minimum wage then you are either very stupid, untrainable, or just plain lazy.
