Hate to tell you, but the football is useless without the nuclear codes that the president carries on his person at all times. Exactly why would his family be targets if he doesn't have the codes? And you also have to consider the fact that he is next to the president almost all of the time, which means that in addition to protecting Trump, the SS is also looking out for him to a certain degree.
Because they could be kidnapped and he could be faced with the ethical decision of doing something to disarm or hurt the football that could cause it not to be useful during a nuclear attack, to the point that even if he were there with Trump, Trump couldn't use it.
Yet when Bill Clinton personally lost the actual nuclear codes, the Libs were fine with it...

You've gotta quit watching 24 and thinking that is what happens in real life. Military personnel who are tapped to be a part of the WH staff are screened VERY closely to look for stuff like that, as well to check on the loyalty of the member in question. Besides, there are 3 nuclear footballs in case one of them craps out. One is with the president at all times, one is with the VP at all times, and one is held in reserve at the White House.

I read the link, and this is from a book that someone wrote. Only problem is, they can't seem to agree when it was lost. One source says it happened in 1998, another says it happened in 2000. Which is it? But, since it has come to light, I'd like to find out if it's true or not.

Discussing classified information in a non secure environment is what you should be upset about. Ever hear of directional microphones? They are useful at long distances in open air environments.
