Hispanic students in these schools reached the "proficient" level in math nearly twice as often as Hispanic students in the regular public schools. What makes this all the more amazing is that these charter schools are typically located in the same ghettos or barrios where other blacks or Hispanics are failing miserably on the same tests. that's a generalization. I think that public schools are very good addressing the gifted/talented kids and the special ed kids. sometimes kids in the middle get lost. again, it's easier to teach hand-picked kids than all the kids in a given neighborhood. my own experience with public school was a very good one. my son excelled and is now in a top tier university. all's well that ends well.

there is, however, a proviso that goes with that. my son didn't excel just because he went to public school and was in G&T programs, he had parents who read to him from the time he was four days old and had him at museums and theatre and paid for tae kwon do and music lessons and took him to 21 countries before he was 18.

not every kid has that advantage and not every parent is equipped to parent the way that we did. that's why programs like head start are so valuable.
