Yes, France was involved. The colony of New France was established in 1534, but was ceded to the United Kingdom in 1763 after the French defeat in the Seven Years War.
Have you taken a look at the history of the Canadia flag ? Prior to 1964, the Union Jack was prominent in all versions.

As for todays immigrants, well duh, take a look at immigrants all over North America, most are not British. However, Trump was referring to the era of 1812, which at that time was heavily British in what is now Canada.

First of all, it appears that Trump did NOT say "Canadians" burned down the White House.
He apparently said, "Didn't you GUYS burn down the White House?"

It is believed that the British attack on Washington was in retaliation for the American attack on York, Ontario, in territory that eventually became Canada. Back then of course, it was a British colony.

It's just not as simple as this OP seems to believe it is. Yes, it was the British that burned the White House down, but obviously Canada is and especially was all about being British.

I hope he doesn't ask the Prime Minister of Ireland about when the Irish burnt down the White House.
