I wonder what happened to the self defense groups, rejecting government, community principals, and self sufficient attitude in the black community.

While you ponder what had been, here is a throwback...

The CIA and the FBI murdered them and shut them down?

COINTELPRO - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

You cannot really shut down a culture.

The entire African American culture transformed from its militaristic and anti-government overtones in the eighties.

There were so many black power organizations too. Half of them ended up turning into street gangs, like the Crips. That transition mostly happened in the nineties.

Just pointing out that is not the reason.

The response you provided is unsubstantial towards explaining the massive shift in African American culture.
I dont think the black panthers represented "african american culture", they were a very small group that was over-represented in the media, sort of like hippy culture. Which made up less than 5% of Americans

The black panthers were just one of many militarized black power groups.

Like I said, many of the old organizations turned into street gangs.

With only a few thousand members total, the media played up the narrative of black people organizing into secretive paramilitary groups to get revenge for slavery, and they sold a shitload of newspapers in doing so. But most didn't do much

Well black Americans did organize into many formal and non-secretive groups.

The secret paramilitary thing is also a common misconception assigned to anarchists though, so I find that completely believable..

to get revenge for slavery, and they sold a shitload of newspapers in doing so. But most didn't do much

I never heard that side of it.

The black power movement in the eighties was more oriented with a libertarian "Come and take it" attitude.

Most of those groups existed with the sole purpose of patrolling and defending the black community. All the major spokesman of that time preached distrust and rejection of the government.

no they were a socialist group, if they were anything. Other than gun rights they had nothing in common with libertarians, they weren't anti-government either they were anti white supremacist state murdering them.

Now that's bullshit propaganda.

Black separatism was popular, but Malcolm X and his ilk were hard on about demonstrating civility with a capacity for violence.

The name of the game was self sufficiency. Not instigating race war.

Couple things.

That Malcolm X quote descends from a puppet twitter account. It isn't real. Malcolm X did say however that there is no capitalism without racism.

You are very focused on the black panthers, which were a rather small part of the movement.

I actually misconstrued a line in your post where I thought you said the black power movement wanted a separate state that killed white people.

I apologize for that.

Although I do wholly disagree that socialism was intrinsic with black power. That is nonsense.

the black panthers were a socialist group and by the 1980's they were already in decline. One of their best known programs was their inner city free breakfast program. Doesn't sound very libertarian does it?
