“Level the playing field.” The free market is just so unfair. Time for big gubmint to impose massive taxes... I mean tariffs... to force people into paying more.

Yeah. Like the EU. Their leftist economic policies call for lots of massive tariffs and subsidies. That’s why despite having 200 million more people than we do, they have a lower GDP.

The issue is their subsidies, which is why we need our own tarriffs.

well either you and your liberal buddies agree with environmental concerns or not when manufacturing steel. Well? Let's remove all of the restrictions and regulations in place and let the US plants make steel like the Chinese. Ok?

Sure, whatever, we don't buy much steel from China anyway.

Right

Well the problem is we have no penalties to trading partners for their exports to the USA but for example..

A Jeep Wrangler can cost $30,000 more in China than in the United States — and the reasons illustrate a growing point of tension between the two countries.

Manufactured in Toledo, Ohio, the Wrangler is a descendant of the jeeps that were used by American forces in World War II.
Equipped with a 3.6-liter engine and a five-speed automatic transmission, the Rubicon edition of the Wrangler has a suggested retail price of $40,530 in the United States.

But in China, the same vehicle would set a buyer back by a hefty $71,000, mostly because of taxes that Beijing charges on every car, minivan and sport utility vehicle that is made in another country and brought to China’s shores.

It is as Trump points out just poor negotiating skills where we gave everything our partner wanted and the US got nothing in return!
Just reality. Let's have FAIR trade not lopsided trade agreements.

Neat, I wonder what happens to a consumer driven economy that depends on imports in a trade war.

We profit from their subsidies. Their big gubmints pay a big chunk of the price of their products for us.

A tariff makes a country pay more for its own product, while making it more expensive for other countries to buy that product too. The result is less demand, less supply, and less production. Wealh destroyed.

Yeah, and China has slaves in sweatshops, factory workers commiting suicides en masse, and tiny wages. Artificial price controls at their best.

A tarriff makes consumers pay more for an imported product, or pay as much as they would for a domestic product if the imported one can be made cheaper.

you are thinking of an export tax.

And the demand for steel and aluminum will not be subsided by a 25% and 10% tarriff respectively.

Who makes the demand for steel and aluminum?
Right NOW the facts are
The United States is the world’s largest steel importer. In year-to-date 2017 (through September), further referred to at YTD 2017, the U.S. imported 26.9 million metric tons of steel, an increase from 22.5 million metric tons in YTD 2016
https://www.trade.gov/steel/countries/pdfs/imports-us.pdf
The United States consumed almost 97 million tonnes.

The producer gets the subsidy. What is their to get? A country’s product is too expensive for you to buy, so their big gubmint covers some or most of the cost.

What does this have to do with Canada, Mexico or South Korea? You know, the places where we import most of our steel from.

Let me guess, you are a fan of the Cleveland Browns, so you don't really understand what "winning" is

Are you always cheery? ;)

I am! It just comes naturally. I live very close to the steel mills in Ill that have been shut down, I know a lot of laid off workers and while the 500 coming back is a great thing for them personally, it is a tiny drop in the bucket.
And I bet that your love of "winning" means you are looking forward to paying more for beer, pick up trucks, appliances and guns and ammo. Cadet Bone Spurs is taking such good care of you!

When you create a tariff the demand for the domestically made product goes up. So the domestic product’s price goes up. As the price goes up, the overall demand for the product decreases. So American steel will cost more, despite American manufacturer’s purchasing less steel overall and thus producing less.
