Once he makes the shift the death warrant will be signed for EVS. History will remember them as a passing fad that had a some attraction to some people and EVS will probably remain around afterwards as a novelty product.
There will be some application for them but certainly not in the hefty parameters required currently by the transportation system in here in North America. In the end we'll be discovered that Ev's simply were not tenable as a replacement for internal combustion engines.

Now he just needs to invent a process that creates the hydrogen, without the significant energy loss in conversion.

We'll be waiting.

Battery-powered cars are not viable. They have to have a lot of extra steel and weight and amenities which means they need to have even more batteries to power all that stuff which adds even more weight to the point where the idea ceases to be viable.
Now battery power for things up to around 1/2 the size of a car is viable. Anything heavier and it's just adding more weight, more moving parts, and losing efficiency.

And a reputable source has Musk saying hydrogen is stupid:

‘The most dumb thing’: Elon Musk dismisses hydrogen as tool for energy storage

On Youtube there are some video's by the owners of factory Toyota hydrogen cars filling them up at the fueling station.
It costs almost $200 for a tank full of hydrogen.
The milage is about the same as a Toyota with a tank full of gasoline.

The video on youtube is fake. Just like the OP's article.

I have serious doubts about the article's veracity.
I posted about this same thing months back. And it is true. Musk was no fan of Hydrogen until he changed his mind. Hydrogen makes much more sense than lugging around up to a couple tons of batteries. Imagine if you can going to a store to by two tons of them?

Rather, he is understanding that EVs can't replace 'gas' vehicles completely and understands that habits of driving cars, pickup turcks need to change in order to meet demands of catastrophic climate change. Hence, he finds that other alternatives such as hydrogen are applicable. He won't quit EVs but he'll be prepared for the obvious.

AGW and Climate change is real!

I would doubt his choice of 'hydrogen' as a good financial choice if he wasn't so successful!

Yep that's the fake video. Look at the comments, everyone is having a good time laughing at it. Musk did NO such thing. Notice there is NO video of Musk saying this? I can promise, if Musk had said this, there would be video on every network in America. Not one fake video on some unknown youtube channel.

How does man create the dust that causes climates to change? When Elon changes paths, he is so smart he has figured it out. He picked the right fuel.
