The accusation that liberals definitively support illegal immigrants is wrong. A better description is they are a mix of pragmatic and humanitarian. The illegals are already here and cemented in our society in various ways.
Border security is a concern on the left. No one wants terrorists or criminals easily getting in and hurting people or taking advantage of us, except maybe the right wing leaders who benefit greatly from that. The right is just accusing the left of that and any other low hanging bad things. Doesn't mean it's true. The resistance on the left was to don trumps campaign of hate. Labeling immigrants, muslims, and illegals as entirely bad things is wrong. The wall became a bigoted monolithic victory chant for the alt right white supremacists. Democrats in Congress were actually in support of legislation to improve border security and immigration vetteing but trump acted incredibly unbalanced. I wouldn't blame them from backing off when it's not clear what the prez wants or means.
There are already border walls or fences up in different areas. On such a long border it's unrealistic to think a full wall is the silver bullet or even possible. A package that could include more walls but not an entire wall would have been the way to go without the labeling of all illegals as criminals beyond just not being documented.
