The Confederate Flag

The CSA flag does have a few good uses.

And so does this.

For the idiots that think the Civil War was about slavery here's some facts for you.

Only about ten percent of the whites in the South owned slaves.

Do you honestly think that the other 90 percent would risk life and limb over an issue that they were not affected by? Send their sons off to fight a battler to save the livelihood of some plantation owner?

You people are as stupid and the nonsense you spew.

Really slack jaw, so why after the civil war did the Confederate cracker states institute Jim crow?

Jim Crow laws were instituted across the South and in some cases in the North as well. In 1875, Congress passed a Civil Rights bill that effectively overruled the Jim Crow laws, but when the case made it's way to the Supreme Court in 1893, guess what happened? The high court of the United States (not the CSA) ruled the 1875 Civil Rights Act unconstitutional, solidifying Jim Crow laws for years to come. It was not until 1957 that Congress passed another Civil Rights Act.

Also, it is ironic that the first Progressive president, Woodrow Wilson, was instrumental in establishing Jim Crow policies throughout the government. But again, we have idiots who want to throw all the blame on the South because they've become the scapegoat for your racist guilt. You see, you can continue to be racist pieces of shit while pointing your racist finger at the South and laying all the blame on them. You've been doing that for years, it's bred into you from generations ago.

You are a whiny little bitch.......of course it was the south

You think that by pointing out a few outliers (see....they did it too) that it somehow absolves the south from its racial guilt

So this notion that the North was fighting for the equality of black people is ABSURD! OR... that the South was fighting to keep black people oppressed. It had NOTHING to do with Civil Rights. It took another century for that "morality" to develop and become prevailing in society.

Your entire post was an epic fail but this was interesting to me. I already showed you the historical documentation that the south ceded over slavery. You simply cant be this thick in the head and maintain credibility. How many times does slavery have to mentioned in the succession documents for you to understand you are wrong? it doesnt matter what the north was fighting for. We all know for sure the south was fighting to keep Blacks enslaved. That flag you love embodies that sentiment.

I already admitted several times that slavery was an intrical part of the issue. Slavery was legal, it was not outlawed by the US. Slaves were property, as ruled by SCOTUS. The main issue about slavery was whether the Federal government had the power to effectively take your property without due process. According to the 4th Amendment, they expressly do not have that power. Now had the SCOTUS ruled that slaves were not property but instead, were humans with constitutional rights... THEN there would be an argument the South was in the wrong. What you and others like to do is jump WAY ahead to AFTER the passage of the 13th and 14th Amendment and claim a moral and legal high ground that simply didn't yet exist.

You want to envision slavery pre-1860 as some deplorable and unacceptable thing in society that Southerners did because they could get away with it, while the North watched in horror and was helpless to stop it. Had the North wanted to end slavery at any time before 1860, all they would have had to do is boycott cotton. Why didn't they do that? It would have ended the practice of slavery much quicker than a war and with far less loss of life. The answer is easy, there was no desire to do that, people up north were prospering off the cotton, it was this nation's leading export. This is why SCOTUS and Congress CONTINUED for 85 years, to uphold the institution and allow it to exist.

Northerners were HORRIFIED over the freedom of the slaves. In the years following the Civil War, many former slaves moved out of the South and went north to find jobs and enjoy their new found freedom, only to be met by angry racist MOBS who lynched them to a degree that was never seen before, even in the South. It was routine practice in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for hoards of whites to drive through black neighborhoods killing every black person in sight. These are the people you are currently glorifying and putting on a pedestal, while you lay the blame all on the South.

In addition, many of the former slaves worked out arrangements with their former masters to stay on the plantation and continue to work. Why would they do such a thing if the conditions were so undesirable? Obviously that was not ALWAYS the case. We are inundated with these horrible images of how slaves were abused, and make no mistake, there were plenty of abuses and that was considerably widespread, but it wasn't universal. What I see here from so many of you is this tendency to paint everyone with a wide brush, to apply your bigoted stereotypes to ALL Southerners equally, because that's what you've been taught to do, that's how you've been taught to think.

That's a real funny lens that you see history through.

The very fact that there was a SCOTUS case that wrongly decided American Citizens were property, WAS the NORTH doing something about it.

Slavery was a huge part of the Southern economy. And it was the biggest reason for the Civil war. Once, that through legislation, the country was going to put an end to the blight of slavery, the southern traitors decided to seize American territory and engage in insurrection.

Conservative fascination with the Civil War and it's attempt to revise history puts on display what a despicable ideology it truly is..

Just curious

You guys all seem to come back with the same lame excuses. Do you troll the same racist web sites to get your stuff?

What I have seen in the last year

- You know, the first slave in America was owned by a black so therefore blacks have nothing to complain about slavery
- You know, white people were slaves too, so blacks have nothing to complain about slavery
- You know, blacks in Africa were involved in the slave trade, so blacks have nothing to complain about slavery
- You know, blacks served in the Confederate army, so blacks have nothing to complain about slavery
- You know, some states in the north had slaves, so slavery was not the fault of the south
- You know, the Civil War was not about slavery, it was about tarriffs

You guys are so predictable. Blacks were victims of slavery. The South is responsible for both the institution of slavery and following civil rights violations

The fact that the South was able to exert undue political influence to force their horrific practice on the rest of the country does not absolve them

Sorry RW- You're the one who considered 'Civil Rights' as a root cause to war. What about today's 'Civil Rights' violations? Why are they less significant? :D

The confederate flag was once a symbol of the civil war. It had a place as a part of our history

After WWII it became a tool to wave in the face of blacks and remind them of their proper place in society. The Klan started carrying the flag. States started putting it on their state flag and flying it on their statehouses. Counterprotesters to Civil Rights carried the flag

It is now a symbol of hate and has no place in public spaces

I don't see where today's black has any reason to complain about slavery, since slavery was outlawed 150 years ago. As much as you want to blame the institution of slavery on the south, that just isn't the truth. Slavery existed because the US government allowed it to exist. Slavery continued to exist because the US Supreme Court upheld it. I just explained how Jim Crow laws following the Civil War were enabled, and it was through SCOTUS rulings and the executive policies of Progressive president Woodrow Wilson. The fact that Congress didn't find time to pass another Civil Rights Act until 1957 is not because the South had your nuts in a vice. You "stomped" us, remember?

Why do you keep saying "you guys" like we are all of the same viewpoint? I'm not here defending racist rhetoric. Slavery was horrible and deplorable. The discrimination against blacks for the century following the Civil War was terrible. That wasn't caused by the Confederate battle flag. The CSA never had anything to do with US policy, law, or ruling by US courts and actions by US presidents.

You're basically acknowledging my point, except you are incorrectly asserting it "was" a symbol when it IS a symbol and will always be a symbol of the Civil War, and will always have a place as a part of our history. Up until the 1840s, the KKK flew the American flag, so should that be turned into a perversion of the symbol it stands for also? Does the KKK wield that sort of power in your mind?

Then why are Conservatives trying to rewrite history as it pertains to slavery?

Slavery continued to exist because for 40 years before the Civil War southern politicians tied up our legislature to ensure not only that slavery would continue but that it would be expanded to new territories
The Supreme Court was much like todays conservative court. More concerned with protecting conservative institutions than doing the right thing

The Confederate Flag is a symbol....a symbol of hatred and injustice

At one time it was a symbol of Confederate rebellion against our country

That changed. All those who loved the Confederate Heritage allowed their symbol to be used as a symbol of hatred and persecution of blacks. If they cared, they should have stood up and protested against their beloved flag being used that way. Instead, they joined in and cheered as the flag was used as a way to intimidate black protestors
Waving that flag came to symbolize not a love of confederate heritage but a way to show that you oppose Civil Rights, integration and equality of the races

Your beloved flag is no longer acceptable? Well, too bad. You deserve it

You dont see because you have a weird viewpoint. Slavery is still affecting the Black community. Pointing that out is not complaining. Its acknowledging a fact.

The institution of slavery was fought for by the south. Yes we can blame that on the south. Who else would we blame it on? You can talk on for days and you cant change that fact. The flag belongs in a museum. Not out in public getting white guys beat up.

everyone has civil rights, not just black people that includes the right to protest and express themselves

Its been explained ad nauseam. If you dont get by now you simply dont have the intellect to understand things more complex than taking a dump.

When my wife and I were in L.A. (near the airport) we saw this Black guy with a Confederate Flag tattoo'd on his shoulder. I sh*t you not!

Should have taken a pic.

Occasionally here in Central Pennsylvania I'll encounter what I refer to as "Black Rednecks". They drive Bubba Trucks with NASCAR stickers on them and wear John Deer hats.

You're kidding right?

Poverty, just like wealth, is inherited.

We, as a country, had a policy of keeping Americans as slaves.

That made them less than nothing.

When they were finally freed? They started with nothing. And we as a country, had a defacto apartheid state.

It wasn't until the late 1960s that full equality was legislated and it wasn't up until very recently that legislation was recognized by a majority of Americans.

There's been very little attempt at parity and whatever policies have been put into place to address past injustices have been both meager and roundly attacked by conservatives.

So yeah..it's a valid complaint.
