The Orwellian Prohibition: Any Mention of Mr. Trump’s Felon Status On The House Floor

I said when all the cases were still in the preliminary that I thought the NY case was the weakest. I figured that the odds favored an acquittal. You can look it up. I gave it 60/40 in favor of Not Guilty. But I underestimated the stupidity of Trump.

His defense was among the worst I’ve ever heard about. Instead of attacking the weakest part of the evidence he spent most of their time screaming that Trump had not slept with Stormy Daniels and Cohen was just awful.

I figured that in New York finding a competent defense attorney would be a breeze. The Lord knows there are a hell of a lot of lawyers in that town.

I still believe there are competent Attorneys in New York. I just think Trump didn’t hire them.

That was his mistake. And somehow he lost a case he should have been able to win.
There was no way Trump was going to win. Not if Clarence Darrow was resurrected.

No toleration of criticizing Mr. Trump as a felon is allowed. Is this the ultimate in cancel culture? Gaga order? Is this an attack on Freedom of Speech, disguised as some congressional rule preventing certain types of speech?

What slippery road has the GOP of today gone down in order to shield, or protect Mr. Trump? What kind of behavior is this?

On the House Floor, Republicans Gag Mentions of Trump’s Conviction

During official proceedings of the G.O.P.-controlled chamber, speaking about former President Donald J. Trump’s felony conviction has been forbidden, while disparaging President Biden and Democrats is routine.

The Republicans who now hold the majority have used those rules to impose what is essentially a gag order against talking about Mr. Trump’s hush-money payments to a porn actress or about the fact that he is a felon at all, notwithstanding that those assertions are no longer merely allegations but the basis of a jury’s guilty verdict. Doing so, they have declared, is a violation of House rules.

...

“The chair would remind members to refrain from engaging in personalities toward presumptive nominees for the office of the president,” is now a common phrase heard in the chamber after the mention of the words “Trump” and “felon.”

On one occasion, Republicans barred Representative Jim McGovern, Democrat of Massachusetts, from speaking for the rest of the day and deleted his comments from the Congressional Record after he railed against Mr. Trump and his court cases.

“When they censor any mention of Donald Trump’s criminal convictions, they are essentially trying to ban a fact,” Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland, the top Democrat on the Oversight Committee, said in an interview. “I am not aware of any precedent where factual statements have been banned in our lifetime.”

Only with a Cult-of-Personality is this possible.

If the system was a tenth as corrupt as you claim Hunter would have been found Not Guilty.

But seriously. The Defense was terrible. Arguing the point of if Trump fucked Stormy Daniels was idiotic. Most people believe he did, and most of those don’t give a Fiddlers Fuck.

Trump was more interested in his image than the issue at hand. And that was fuck up number six hundred.

I think he did. And I don’t give a shit. If he did or didn’t isn’t going to convince me he is worth voting for or against. I really don’t give a fuck that he cheated on his business by cooking the books to screw the tax man. Finding a businessman within a thousand miles of Wall Street who wasn’t lying and cheating would be just flat assed impossible. They’re all crooks.

That’s why I figured it would be easy to get the acquittal. Smart lawyers coupled with everyone does it and bam. Good to go. But Trump who got himself into this, fucked himself on the defense.

That’s part of my problem with Trump. It isn’t that he’s a crook. It’s that he is a dumb crook. I mean the blithering idiot was recorded telling people to do what he was accused of doing. And what did he do in reply? Cohen is awful and I never screwed Stormy.

Trump lost because the judge is an activist. His daughter, is a democrat operative and was making buckets of money off this trial.

Trump lost because his defense was stupid.

Look. This is New York we are talking about. If you pick twelve random strangers as many as four of them will have voted for Trump. So it is reasonable to assume that at least one Juror was a Trump supporter. Propaganda aside, Trump picked up voters in 2020 compared to 2016.

So the idea that they were all in cahoots is laughable.

That’s the problem with being a part of the cult. You have to have exclusive propaganda talking points. In discussing the “stolen” election we are to believe that Trump is so loved he picked up tons of voters in deep blue New York. In discussing the trial we are supposed to believe that Trump is so hated that no juror would find him not guilty, in the place where he got more than 20% of the vote.

Trump’s defense was simply put, incompetent. I don’t know if that was the best the lawyers could do, or if Trump was directing them. I suspect the latter. But they were awful. A good defense would have gotten at least a hung jury. It should have. It probably could have gotten a not guilty verdict.

But the defense ignored the evidence and focused on two things. Cohen was awful, and Trump never screwed Stormy Daniels.

You are massaging your personal opinion and offering it as evidence.

nothing special about this one. it is just the traditional house rule that the founders talked about at valley forge, just before recapturing the strategic delaware airport....

don't blame trump's poor lawyers. trump was found guilty because he is guilty, and he will be sentence to 20 years for acting like an asshole in and out of court.

It's use in this situation is unprecedented.

and...

Tom Paine (one of the most repulsive men of the events during the 1700s - in my opinion), was one of the people who cheered on the slaughter and riots of the French. He was a misanthropic Brit who came over to the colonies late -- and spread his hatred and nonsense.

Lots of people did whatever, and are found not guilty. I want it hard to convict someone. I want the defense to put forward the best arguments they can. Trump’s lawyers were awful, and that is insulting to me.

Trump demanded his lawyers do and say certain things. It was his way of campaigning from a criminal trial.

Most of us want the same thing. Trump had effective counsel. It's just that he left so much incriminating evidence behind and continued to implicate himself through public statements -- all along. Still does. He's what we call stubborn children -- incorrigible.

Some democrats want all mention of Trump's felony convictions to stop. Every time a Democrat says the word felony, Trump gets another million in campaign donations.
