What I have seen of Tijuana and other border towns, makes me suspect a large percent of the people there are not applying for asylum but just there to see the action and at times be part of it.

The vetting done in the asylum process is a long and through one. It typically takes 3 to 6 months after the initial interview but it can run up to 12 months depending on the background investigations. The chance of being accepted is not good for Mexicans and Central American. Depending on the country 74% to 88% of applicant petitions will be rejected. The process has been criticize widely because of the length time required and the cost. However, those accepted into the asylum program have a lower arrest rate than the general population and those that are not disabled have an employment rate about the same as legal permanent residents.
