The 6 million is the most generally accepted estimate of how many jews died. There are many other estimates ranging from a less than 100.000 to 20 million (not to say they are credible). Given how hateful it's to even discuss the issue - landing you in prison in Germany... I wouldn't be surprised if the official estimate was slightly off.
