Do you really want to use that analogy?

Okay, let's look at that.

The hostages were released when Reagan took office because the Iranians didn't want to start a whole new set of negotiations with a new set of people, and they already gotten everything they wanted.

The Shah was dead, they got sanctions lifted, they embarrassed the US.

So for most of Reagan's administration, Iran was kind of a pain in the ass. They sponsored terrorist groups in Lebanon, which took American hostages and Reagan had to pay a hefty bribe to get them back.

Reagan also had to arm and enable Saddam Hussein to keep the Iranians contained. How did that work out again?

So in short, the Iranians got everything they wanted, and they lured Reagan into a scandal that almost got him impeached.

Um... yeah. sounds like a winner to me.
