Again, I agree completely. I've worked a lot of those jobs that they say Americans won't do.

I've never done stoop harvesting, so I can't really speak to that. But unloading trucks, moping floors, bussing tables, driving a taxi, digging graves evens, yes, I would be fine doing it, if it came to that again.

No but they're sending every dollar they make out of country, unlike immigrants who are spending every dollar they make in the USA. Contributing to local economies and local merchants. "Guest workers" are sending all of their income to their home countries, to their families there.

Which is why we need to make sure we mechanize all agricultural work and punish those agencies that still want to use human labor.

Mechanize picking tomatoes and strawberries? I don't think so. You can't mechanize planting tomato seedlings, or picking lettuce or apples or a host of other things. Harvesting wild blueberries has been mechanized in a lot of our fields (we call them barrens) but there is still a lot of property that has too many rocks or is too uneven for that.

Machines can't discern ripe berries/tomatoes from those which are over ripe or not ready to pick, and they lack the dexterity of finesse to pick one tomato and leave the rest. Machines can only strip the plant.

There are machines which plant seedlings for lots of plants, but I can see tomatoes being a problem. They're more of a vine and need caging.

My church going friends are all logging in to online services. The only one who actually went to a live service in the USA on March 15th is looking at 75 people in her congregation at that service who all got sick - fully 1/4 of the 300 who attended, who then infected their family and friends, creating a cluster of over 200 cases, with 29 deaths so far.

Areas where there were protests last week are seeing new cases spiking this week.

The March travel ban stopped most travel into the US except for a list of essential services. Also the Consulates and Embassies have been closed for routine immigration and visa processing for over a month. The bottom line is very few people are entering the US legally.

For illegal entry, it's business as usually but why would anyone in their right mind want to enter the US illegally now. Mexico has had only about 1% of the covid 19 cases that are in the US. I suspect that Covid 19 is doing what neither Trump nor ICE has been able to do, send illegals back home.

I don't think they underestimate that at all. I think they're naive if they think that Americans will take these jobs because Americans cannot afford to work for the wages offered. How much does it cost to keep a roof over your head and food on your table? It's not just a matter of you taking a job working on a farm. That's not what migrant farm hands do.

Are you prepared to give up your home, load the family into the car and go on the road, living in bunk houses, going from planting crops in one location to another, going from the strawberry farms in June, tomato farms in July, following the harvest seasons in various parts of the country? Your children will eat, but they won't get an education, health care, dental care, and they won't have a sense of home or community. Everything you own will be in your car.

IMHO, most American workers aren't physically fit enough for field world. I worked picking fruit and vegetables in Florida many years ago It is backbreaking work. Also, most of the work is miles away cities and towns which makes transportation a problem. You may find work close by but it never lasts very long, a few days or few weeks at most and then you have to travel to find more work. Most people would make more money off their unemployment.
