Because to the simple minded, there's good and bad. If you are good, then everything about you is pure, sweet and glittery unicorn farts. Every allegation against you is false and you can simply state you are innocent of whatever is being thrown at you and the world has to believe you. If, OTOH, you are bad, the opposite applies. You are stripped of your basic humanity, no protections apply to you, and the entire world is justified in doing whatever it wants to you, using whatever means are at hand.
