Any Democrats who opposes Trump's plan is establishing himself as a total hypocrite. This plan is good for young families who want to have children but can't afford it because of the astronomical costs of child care. Why shouldn't child care be tax-deductible, this should have been done years ago? This idea may encourage people to have children and boost the birth rate, which is now below replacement level, a long range disaster for any nation.

And that's probably the real reason politicians on the left and right turned a blind eye to illegal immigrants... we, as a Nation, are not having enough children....?

Then stop murdering the unborn.

Making it financially easier for women to have babies will solve much of that....

Not a bad idea...but Marty, more than likely, the same smaller businesses who are the ones most likely to not have maternity leave as a benefit, more than likely does not have short term disability as a benefit either.

I think MOST companies in the USA have maternity coverage/pay for at least 6 weeks....but the smaller businesses who can't spread out the coverage for such an event among thousands of employees or hundreds of employees not going on maternity pay...are the ones with problems doing it.

Trump's plan is to let these women collect Unemployment for 6 weeks....well ....unemployment does NOT pay ones full salary....would short term disability pay the full salary?

Short term disability for me I think is 60% or 80% of my Salary.

One could also create collectives for small businesses to try to entice them to offer short term disability (ugh, can't use acronyms for that one). Spread out the costs.

I still think these are better plans than forcing companies to pay for it out of their own pocket, but the concept bothers me as a leaning libertarian, bothers me as a federalist because it should be done at the State level, but intrigues me because the country needs a higher birth rate, and more importantly, births by families with people working and in good economic conditions.

Yes, blame me as a low level eugenicists, but if we don't do something soon we will be going the way of Japan.
