Those who testify as expert witnesses are generally prostitutes. When I think of an independent expert I think of a scientist whose career is not spent going to court houses around the nation.

It's supposed to be someone who is a expert in a specific field who takes no side in a argument or debate but in reality is someone who supports the position of whoever pays them the most. This may not apply to all independent experts but I suspect it does to most.

Addressing your signature as an example I will go with Buffett's Graham and Doddsville argument. If you end up with 20 winners and 10 of them had the same coin flipping teacher and only 19 of the 30 students of that teacher failed to make the cut but did do so by only 1 flip and one by 2 that defines expertise. However Obama never cites the pragmatic proof of expertise.
