Michigan and New Jersey add in another 20,000,000. That's nearly one third of the entire US population spread across five reliably democratic states. The Electoral College like the Senate was designed to prevent a tyranny of the majority. The 17th Amendment scuttled one leg of that tripod.

If you view the USA as a Europe, the states being 50 countries, it doesn't work if you have a central government, the EU shows you that. Before the EU, it was the EEC. So each country trades with one another through a commission, a tiny limited government in a way. When that commission morphs into a government, a law can work for one country but doesn't work with another.

Simply put, the US government is too big and causing your troubles, the member states in the EU are just going through the same shit.
