Budget

Amazing how many people think an $18 trillion national debt is responsible fiscal policy.
Most of that debt already exists. Raising the debt ceiling doesn't create 18 trillion in debt. Technically it creates debt, but the concept of not paying for money that by law has been allocated to be spent is not somewhere we want to go. It's probably not even legal to fail to raise the debt ceiling.

A forest Gump quote is in order...

Stupid is as stupid does

Suits this country very well, spending what we don't have... Just plain incredible! So we just print to try to cover the stupidity... Then we tax thinking that will fix our spending and printing problem, just like an circular firing squad.

Embrace the suck

How do you want to pay it down?

It's quite simple. You spend less money than you take in.
True, but nobody can agree on how to accomplish that. There are plenty of ideas out there, but in this political climate we just can't have everybody get together, sit down, and come up with a solution
That would involve actually working with "people" who have horns and pitchforks.

Good idea

Do you support both cutting spending and increasing taxes?

No, because we don't need to increase taxes. The government doesn't need $4 trillion a year to effectively run the country.

If social security and Medicare are to remain essentially as they are, their revenues must be increased. Their taxes must be increased.

Social Security and Medicare are the top two spending items. Drastic cuts to those are going to make a lot of people very angry and scared.

Taxes are to a progressive like meth is to a toothless meth head...

There can never be enough...

A mistake already baked in the cake, no turning back.

We are screwed...

We can't even begin with Social Security and Medicare reform because extreme left wingers say don't touch those.

Spending cuts are going to be tough, but we do have to get it done.

And if you in principle will not allow any increases in taxes, then you've made it much, much harder to make the necessary spending cuts to balance the budget.

Extremists take things off the table because of ideology.

Moderates will consider any and all.

Yeah, we're screwed if a significant block of legislators says "no tax increases period". As long as compromise remains a bad word, we are royally screwed unless the unlikely event of absolute power occurs.

No because they're smart enough to know they aren't omniscient gods.

Yet, they realize the Founders believed in a govt of compromise

Well, the blue dogs are all but gone, a good thing.
Poach more Rinos, finish the job.

There's just not a way to truly cut Soc Sec and Medicare over the short 10-15 year term, because the boomers age out of work. I'm sure there is a bipartisan support for increasing the age and reducing cost of living raises. In fact, the deal on the table now increases costs to seniors.

Norquist, the Kochs and the 140 or so families who own the GOP have a core belief they should not pay more of the burden. So there's not going to be a rate increase. Whether tax expenditures can be cut .....?

This country is divided more than ever, the last 6 1/2 years fully augmented the absolute division.
Standing ground no matter what on both sides is an absolute must... The left has done that better and is further along than the right.

The Rinos are all that stands in the way of where this needs to play out...

So you're an anarchist nihilist. Nice to know that at least some of the Tea party extremist right winger backing is based on that nonsense. Should make it easier to vote the fools out in 2016.
