Can we really trust dictatorship to protect our rights?

I've notice that a lot of people are OK with the courts interpreting the constitution in such a way as it would expand liberty. This sounds really fine because the end product is more liberty and who can argue with that. The problem with that is while we are allowing the government to implement it's will we are allowing this kind of relationship to exist within government itself. It is like we are OK with a dictatorship as long as that dictatorship uses it's authority to promote liberty and it won't do any harm to us. The problem is is that this can only last temporarily because eventually the people in power may not care about you or your freedom. How would you be able to prevent the destruction of your liberty by using the democratic process when there isn't one. What would be the point of complaining to other voters when no one's vote can change what the people in power do?
