The problem with this entire idea is that it gives debtors the idea that they don't have to pay what they owe as the taxpayers will bail them out if they don't.

Further, it gives schools no motivation to rein in costs, as they can just raise tuition and the people will have no problem with the new price as the taxpayers will be picking up the tab in the end

Why is it okay to bail out Wall Street, and Auto Companies, and rich people who don't need it, but not our children???

No the would not. The vast majority of student loan debt is through federal direct loans. The government came up with the money when they lent it. They don't have to come up with money to write it off. In additions, your taxes are based on your income and have no relationship to the government's debt. You pay what you pay whether the government owes $22T or $32T so it costs you exactly nothing.

The problem with student loans dates back to when they are originated.

The lender doesn't make an assessment on the riskiness of the loan, and the ability of the student to actually pay the money back. If young man is a smart kid who is taking a field like proctology, they are likely to be in a lot better position to pay their note. People who are the skill to pull things out of other people's asses will never starve.

On the other hand, a degree in medieval Polish poetry isn't going to command many zloty in the labor market. If the government loans a student money for that, they should demand a co-signer and collateral.

If they want to finance a degree in Lesbian Oppression studies, they should be allowed to take that risk.
