Removal is automatic. However, just like the House has to go to through the Justice Department to punish someone who ignores their subpoenas, after removal it would still be up to the Justice Department to determine if a crime was committed and then the ex-president could be indicted for those crimes. Ex-presidents are not immune and an impeachment trial does not give him a double jeopardy defense.
