WHO will have to explain why they released their transmission statement on January 14th and then had to retract it barely 10 days later. China is a notoriously unreliable source of information for sure, but the US intelligence agencies were already advising the White House that China was downplaying the severity, and Rump chose to ignore those warnings until he could no longer ignore them. His reasoning for downplaying it as a "hoax" seems to have been the same as China's, that it wouldn't look good to admit it and it might be costly. Because of the delay in reacting and testing, it's been costlier than it could have been with adequate response, such as the previous O'bama administration showed them just before the transition with a scenario exactly like the one that came to pass.
