And you can chalk that up to poor leadership by local government. That by itself did far more to hurt Detroit schools then anything else. So any solution that doesn't include getting local government back on track, in a really big way is no solution at all for Detroit's public schools. Charter schools included.

And you can chalk that up to poor leadership by local government. That by itself did far more to hurt Detroit schools then anything else. I think Detroit is the exception. Many American cities have been controlled by the Left for decades...think Chicago, but they did not fall like Detroit. Unfortunately, Detroit had some unique traits that lead to it's decline. The decline of the auto industry and the racial issue being the biggest. Of course, the Fed Gov also contributed with it's crazy real estate schemes, like buy a home for $1 back in the 1970s.

DETROIT — Nearly all of Detroit's public schools were closed Monday after the teachers union urged members to call out sick following a weekend announcement that the district wouldn't be able to pay its teachers starting this summer.

District spokeswoman Michelle Zdrodowski said in an email Monday morning that 94 of the district's 97 schools would be closed for the day. About 46,000 students are enrolled in the district's schools.
