Do Americans do history at school?

Christopher Columbus is credited with discovering America because of the Doctrine of Discovery. Obviously he could not discover a place where there were already people living there. The Doctrine of Discovery gave him the power to kill anyone on any land if they were not Christian.

and, of course, everyone in Europe knew all about the USA, because it was in all of their history books. Vikings had shared that information with the King of Spain.

He made Europe aware of the lands there, and started permanent Colonization. Others like the Vikings may have found it first, but those didn't lead to the permanent opening of travel between the old world and the new world. Calling it discovering is simplistic, but accurate from the perception of those From Europe, Asia, and Africa.

The rest is revisionist blame whitey crap.

It’s not the least bit accurate.

Yes, it is. Before that Europe had no true documentation of the Americas. After Columbus they had an idea of some landmass, and subsequent explorers expanded on that knowledge.
