There is no need for a wall, which, in spite of what Trump says, would be extremely costly, ugly, and difficult to maintain and monitor.

A far better alternative is be a biometric ID card which every citizen would be required to possess and carry. While such an instrument would be useful in many ways its primary purpose will be proof of citizenship. The card should be addressable by swiping (in the manner of a credit/debit card) in readers which attach to an ordinary telephone line and all employers would be required to have and to use to ensure the citizenship of all existing and new employees.

Penalties for hiring undocumented (green card) non-citizens should be severe. Once there is no opportunity to find work in the U.S. there will be no reason for illegal migration and those illegals who are already here will either leave on their own accord or will eventually be detected and deported.

The cost of such an ID card program would be minor in comparison to the cost of a wall. The ID program would be foolproof whereas the wall would not.
