It's all a money game. Here they lock homeless people up for public intoxication, the fine is $75 or so many hours community service which they do cleaning public parks. You see lot's of homeless people cleaning up parks

yea I know, don't understand why someone don't clean up this out of control judicial system and go back to the constitution, hell they are using the civil court down here to lock away folks for 6 months for non payment of child support, no work release and no public defender because again they classify it a civil suit.

They get money from the feds for doing it, it's ridiculous.

I have mixed feelings on child support, but I've never understood locking them up for months, nobody is getting money doing that

Its getting even weirder, last time I heard at the local jail, they are even starting to charge inmates room and board. How does that work? By law they can only hold them for 6 months and have to release.

By the way lass I thought America got rid of debtors prisions in the 18th century

And I'll tell you something else. I have relatives in the deep south that I spent some vacations and a couple of summers with growing up. I speak perfect "Yawl (or as some USMB members insist, "ya'll"), and I have been stopped because my license is from out of state and I just start talking Yawl and they suddenly talk very nice and have never given me a ticket.

Clearly that officer provoked her and escalated the situation with "put out your cigarette" and "step out of the car" and arresting her. It wasn't that he wanted her respect. He wanted her to cower and shuffle and she wasn't having it. So in his tiny and racist little mind, he was teaching her a lesson and it was within his right to teach her that lesson no matter what the actual law said because of who he was, the uniform he was wearing and who she was. In that part of the country, it's the "natural order" of things.

I couldn't agree with you more however us whites don't act that way when we are pulled over. We yes sir officer until they lighten up. I think black people need to realize a cop deserves the same respect that a judge does. In every cop on black caught on tape its always a black being rude. Do you do that to the judge?

Exactly. Everyone of these "bad cop" situations have the perp not following directions. I've been stopped for speeding and always begin with "Good afternoon, Officer." I got out of some tickets and others I just thanked them and went on my way. One difference I would do now, is tell him I realize he was tough job ... especially now.

If Sandra Bland had a personality that didn't lend her to jail time, she should have acted just as I do. It's nice to go home.

I used to drive through Prairie View a couple of times a week,you never speed or break any traffic law in the area because they're known for handing out tickets.
The wacky chick went to college there and she knew damn well what the cops in the area were about.

You and I both know many Blacks have problems with cops because they tend to be exceptionally belligerent, especially the women. So, knowing that, why did this cop exceed the purpose of that traffic stop by telling Bland, whom he probably knew was inclined to belligerence, to put her cigarette out?

The purpose of that stop was to issue a warning or a summons. So why didn't he focus on that purpose, issue a summons and resume patrol, instead of deliberately provoking what he knew very well would be a belligerent response. It is clear that his provocative Mr. Charlie attitude escalated the incident from a simple traffic offense to a volatile ego conflict. Now she's dead, he's suspended, the taxpayers will be paying off a million dollar lawsuit -- and cops all over America, including many who have more sense than to do what he did, will be compromised by the effect of his wholly unnecessary, stupidly authoritarian excess.

It's not at all obvious what happened there.. Yes the incidence escalated into an arrest and detention. But the media has never addressed the issue of WHY she spent 3 days there. Bail was set on the day of the arrest at $5000 -- yet the family that loves her so much didn't POST bail for 3 days????

Something stinks.. And I think it has to do with her recent activism about the police and her alleged depression...

Who's stupid enough to get in a fight or argument with a cop? Ive had cops act this way towards me but I didn't take the bait. I just complied with all their commands.
