Everything's Big in Texas...

So conservatives are FOR the expansion of government? Conservatives WANT our government at all levels to get bigger as the economy grows?

Who are the small-government conservatives then? What happened to them? Off riding their unicorns?

btw, I knew a post like yours would come up. I read the link. I figured someone on the right would step in it.

Texas is doing well and can afford it. They have enough sense to cut back when they see they can't afford it. Did you expect them to be dumb asses like the demonrats in California, NY, Michigan and other states that are broke because of your policies? Fucking dumb ass.

I disagree.

No one can "afford it [Bigger Government]" and hopefully Texans will decrease its size in the next 10 years.

However, many government jobs at the state and local level are MANDATED AT THE FEDERAL LEVEL. So whether or not a state increases or decreases their government jobs is often not a reflection of that state's values, but rather National Laws. Therefore, the implied arguement that Texas itself has chosen to expand government is a little silly.

So Texas was singled out for federal government mandates?

So if a governor promises to shrink the size of his state's government, he's really lying because he has no control over it?

Texas can add government jobs because the state is being run right. Let's see now...how long has Texas had a republican governor? Is NYCarbineer from Dumas, Texas?

Yeah, somehow he neglected the other article from the same source:

The inventory of private-sector jobs in Texas increased by 732,800 between April 2001 and the same month this year, according to an On Numbers analysis of new federal employment data.

No other state registered an increase of more than 100,000 private-sector jobs during the decade. Only 19 states and the District of Columbia posted any gains at all.

If my math is correct Texas increased private sector jobs by 9% in 10 years.

Government jobs increased 17% over the same period.

That's their business. Each state can do what they want. It's the United States of America. Not America with states. You don't understand how this is supposed to work. That's the problem.

and yet you have no idea what the bigger government is actually doing.

American Thinker Blog: The secession movement in Vermont
After more than two centuries of statehood, however, the hearts of Vermont's Ben & Jerry's-swilling populace was broken by Barack Obama. The secessionist party's gubernatorial candidate is currently the owner of Radio Free Vermont and states the case for those northeasterners desirous of opting out of the U.S. of A.:

"People in Vermont in general are very antiwar, and all their faith was in Obama to end the wars. I ask people, 'Did you get the change you wanted?' They can't even look you in the eyes. We live in a nation that is asleep at the wheel and where the hearts are growing cold like ice."

The secessionist movement already commands the support of 13% of Vermont's voters. If supporters for the state's drive to legalize the use of marijuana for the treatment of sandal fungus, windmill pox and solar panel blindness succeed, pundits expect support for secession

Fourth, the State most likely to seek separation from the Union within the next few decades will be California! While 50% of the Latino American population is in TX & CA, TX, Texas has the largest percent to conservative Latinos, they break close to 50-50 (more still lean blue though), but in CA they lean far left. The far left latinos are the MECHA ones the ones that thing CA and the Southwest should be returned to Mexico or great an independent state of Aztlan. Right now I think the CA population is 45% White Non-Latino, 35% Latino, the the rest Asian, Africa America and other. However, the White population is shrinking (moving and not reproducing). The Latino population is booming via reproducing, illegal immigration and legal immgration. by 2020 at the latest, Latinos will make up AT LEAST 50% of the state population. What happens when it gets to 70%. 80% or 90%? The CA economy is still extremely large, but it's shrinking big time. It's not going to get any better with the job producers leaving town in droves, being replaced by uneducated illegal immigrants that don't know English and won't (and do not) learn English. The exodus of the White population will continue with the influx of illegals and the rapidly imploding CA economy. We already hear reports of counties in LA that ethnically cleanse the African Americans from the areas. What makes you think that will stop. What happens when Latinos make up 90% (it will happen) and CA economy decreases to the level of looking like a 3rd world nation and unemployment is through the roof? The Latino will blame the racist gringo policies and demand that the state of CA, with 90% of the population speaking Spanish goto Mexico!

Government jobs. Some are important and most ain't. Here's an analogy: a liberal opens his pool for the summer and finds it's half full. He turns on the pump/filter and water comes gushing in. He walks away expecting the pool to be full when he comes back and instead finds less water. He turns on the pump to the max and the next day he finds the pump burned out and the pool empty. The pool represents the Country and the water represents tax revenue. You can't confiscate money and give it away in the form of jobs and expect the economy to grow. Prosperity only comes from the private sector.

Texas, Florida lead in government job growth

by G. Scott Thomas

Friday, May 27, 2011

Texas led the states with the largest growth in government jobs over the past 10 years.

Big government grew a bit bigger in 43 states and the District of Columbia during the past decade.

Texas posted the largest 10-year upswing in federal, state and local government jobs, adding 286,800 positions, according to an On Numbers study of employment data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Texas, Florida lead in government job growth | The Business Journals

What point are you trying to make? Of course Texas would have posted the largest increase in government jobs in the past ten years. They had the largest population growth in the last ten years adding 4.3 million to their population since 2000. According to the article, they showed an 18% increase in government jobs while posting a 20% increase in total population. So by looking at the numbers, we can determine that the number of government jobs is Texas was reduced per capita in the last ten years.

I do not support big government, but I do support smart government. The size of the government is only meaningful to the extent that it serves the needs of the people. If it can do that efficiently then everyone is getting their money's worth. However, if it becomes so large as to waste the money of those it serves, then it needs to be reduced in size.

First, you are comparing apples and oranges: The article is about TOTAL Government employees. The Governor has no control over the number of Texas residents employed by the FEDERAL government. He also has no control over LOCAL government employees (mostly teachers).

The only way you could hold the size of a state's government accountable to the Governor, is to look at the growth of STATE employees, and these are often mandated positions created through, but not financed, by Federal Statute.

A. you have nothing to prove that any Governor ever "promised to shrink the size of his state's government."

B. You have no evidence that STATE EMPLOYMENT increased in Texas.

However, the vast majority of government jobs are in education, which is why you naturally have more government jobs in states with larger populations (of children). Examples of very expensive federally mandated LOCAL teaching jobs are Special Education teachers and ESL teachers. Additionally, NCLB requires states to hire a number of people to administer the manditory state testing program.

The implication is that Texas is really no better at controlling the size of government than anywhere (particularly NY) where political leanings are "liberal."

The fact is that without a STATE employee per capita comparison, there is no way of evaluating one state against another.

Not their:
(1) Income tax its ZERO! That means no State SMALL BUSINESS TAX!
(3) The cost of living it's very low (due in part to their VERY strict lending rules during the mortgage boom of the late 90s and early '00s).
(3) Cost of Real Estate, some of lowest out there, yet some of the best bang for your buck(ditto for lending rules strictness).
(4) Local taxes/municipal taxes (they don't have any)
(5) Corporate Tax (don't have any)
(6) Property Tax Dollars (the rate is high). The property taxes are high, but because of conservative lending laws, real estate costs are very low.
(7) Foreclosure rate - Some of the lowest in the country.
(8) Private Sector Job Creation - In last 10 years Texas added 738K jobs, not other state cracked 100K (California lost 638K over that same span)!

In fairness - they are the highest in:
(1) Property Tax Rates - But not property tax dollars, because strict lending laws kept property value low and affordable, hence one of a few states not hit by the mortgage meltdown.
(2) Sale Tax - They trade the corporate and income tax for a consumption tax. Which is the prime reason companies flock to TX and private sector jobs grew 7x faster then 2nd place!
(3) Deficit - It's high. Only a liar would say it wasn't. Not as bad as CA though!
