Give a man a fish.......

Most of the fish he has access to are swimming in polluted rivers.

Then he can offer to clean up the polluted rivers for a percentage of the fisherman's haul.

It's called being proactive.

Quite an endeavor.

What he needs to do is get the gubmint to stop those who are poluting the river for profit and impacting those who need that river for fish

So government is responsible for greater life expectancy? Wow who knew?

Government puts the dill in the pickles, the cheese on the nachos and the fun in a barrel of monkeys.

Makes you wonder how human kind survived the millennia until Marx wrote the instruction manual in 1848, doesn't it?

Actually, humans did not survive well in 1848

It was not until the 1900s that government intervention doubled the life expectancy

Under the circumstances you describe below the man has some choices to make.

Get fish from others or find another way to eat or die.

If he gets fish from others he is dependent on them and when they can't feed him anymore he dies.

If he finds another way to get fish he is independent and will live his life fulfilled.

RWingers man has has been completely brainwashed. He's unable to think for himself. He needs govt at every turn to lead him by the nose. RWingers man has been given a fishing pole but refuses to work because all of his food is paid for by the people who are fishing.

Well lets look at that man

He has been given an education. He knows HOW to fish. His problem is

- Can't afford the equipment to fish
- There aren't any fish where he lives
- If he scrapes enough money to buy fishing equipment, he is forced to compete with those who are much better equipped
- If he tries to fish in the good fishing holes, he finds he is restricted from fishing there

Silly responses to this thread, as can be seen in most threads of late.

The core issue of this thread is education. We continue to teach our students in the same way as we have for the past half century. Times have changed, as have school boards, but not in a good way.

So he should just give up and let someone else work it out for him?

How do you clean up a polluted river?

Depends what it's polluted with. Garbage is much easier to clean up than say some chemicals. but it's all cleanable.
Garbage isn't really pollution. How does a man that doesn't eat clean up a river polluted with chemicals?

That's sure what it looks like RW is saying.

You can improvise fishing equipment.

You can move where the fish are.

You can also move away from competition.

You can get the government to stop restricting others from good fishing holes.

If you can't fish, maybe you can start up a bait shop and sell bait and other supplies to local fisherman.

Maybe you can provide another service to the local fisherman.

The only thing limiting what we do is the drive.

Go to where the fish are?

Have you people checked the prices of waterfront property lately?

I think this thread is a perfect example of the differences between people. some of us will think up ways around any problem we face, the others will make excuses of why we can't do something.

In my area, a lot of people fish in the canals. Of course, no one would actually eat a fish caught in one of our canals since they are polluted with the run off from Big Sugar. They just do it for sport. IIRC, pregnant women and children are cautioned against eating anything caught in fresh water in Florida.

The point is that for some people the deck is stacked so that your simplistic solutions are not that easy

Go get a job is easy advise except for those who live in an area with no jobs

Move to where the jobs are is easy advise except for those who lack the nestegg to reestablish in a new location

and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime

This characterizes the Conservative solution to poverty. Makes alot of sense actually, how could liberals not embrace it. After all, "free stuff" causes dependencey.

But what about the man who cannot afford a fishing pole?
What about the man who lives in a place where there are no fish?

Liberals say....Give that man a fishing pole so he can fish. But Conservatives scream, Why should "I" pay for his free stuff?

Liberals say, bring more fish into his area. But Conservatives scream, It is not my problem where he lives

Conservatives are willing to teach a man to fish. But once they do, they consider the job to be done

Conservatives no longer believe they should pay to teach others how to fish, or lend them a fishing pole. They want to deregulate, poison the water & kill all the fish so they can starve the slaves.

They want to stomp fuzzy kittens too. Remember that.

If we stopped subsidizing flood insurance so the rich living on the water fronts get new homes every 5 years from tax payers, waterfront property prices would drop.

The point is that life is not fair, never has been, never will be. The government cannot make everyone have equal results in life. All the govt can ever do is give everyone an equal opportunity. Some make more of the opportunity than others, sometimes its brains, sometimes luck. The role of govt is not to make everyone equal in terms of material things.

People who are truly in need should look to churches and charities, not the govt. Conservatives support churches and charities, liberals think the govt is God.
