In the 1960's I visited two state mental hospitals in connection with a psych class I was taking. One was the state mental hospital and the other was the Home for the Mentally Retarded. These places were pure Bedlam.

In the state mental hospital, both the chronic men's and women's ward were so ripe with feces and urine, everyone put their hands over their mouth and nose when walking through them. Patients, if you choose to call them that, wander around total unsupervised. Some walked up to us crying and screaming and others just lay in floor or stared blankly at a wall or out the window. At the end of the tour the director explained that there was one psychiatrist for ever 400 patients which meant a patient saw a doctor about once a month and that was the extent of treatment. You either got well by being separating from society or you went totally insane and spent the rest of your life there.

The Home for the Retarded was better but there was little attempt to educat the children. I say children but most were adults. What really tore me up was the discussion of visitors day when parents and friends visit the kids. Only 1 in 7 of them every had visitors, yet every week they looked forward to seeing their mom or dad, some had been waiting 10 or 20 years, not realized that no one would ever come.

After this, I said I would never go near one of these places. That was 50 years ago. I hope the situation is better today. I don't know how it could be worse.

I read about his first foster daughter earlier, and I was horrified.

So often when you look at these attacks, the perpetrators are really sick people which usually starts when there're young. When a spouse or parent says I have a really sick dangerous person on my hands, nobody will do anything until something like this attack at the baseball field happens. For people on Medicaid, getting outpatient help is damn near in possible.
