What resources does Martha's Vineyard lack?

A customs and immigration office, Translators, medical facilities or homeless shelters. There is only one hospital on the island, and it has only 25 beds.

When the refugees arrived on Martha’s Vineyard, the local people met them with warm clothing, food and medical care. But island residents had no immigration facilities.

All of their seasonal restaurants, hotels and businesses were closed for the off-season and there were no jobs for them either.

In an effort to mitigate those risks and find room within our shelter system, the city has temporarily suspended the policy surrounding timing for placements in shelters. This is not a decision taken lightly and we will make every effort to get asylum seekers into shelter as quickly as possible as we have done since day one."

Slang is not what the Mayor’s actions deal with, but rather revising (or circumventing) certain traditional (or court ordered) policies put into place over decades to help house the homeless.

For example …

“It suspends three major shelter requirements: Ensuring that families who request a bed receive one within a certain time frame; that families be assigned private units with a bathroom, refrigerator and kitchen rather than in congregate settings; and that certain tenant protections exist for those staying at a dwelling unit for 30 or more days.”
