So black americans back then were saluting the flag and saying, yup. This is the greatest country in the world because it stands for freedom? Just once, put yourself in those shoes and try to say that.

America has always stood for advancing freedom? Especially during the slavery days. Especially when they first got here and tamed the "savages"? Freedom to them? Really. You know who had freedom back then? White males. Period.

We learned. We got better.

We have gotten better of course, but I want you to think about the time line of when Slavery ended and when blacks could even vote here. That is a long, long time. It was a relatively short time ago, when blacks could not even vote in this country, or marry who they wanted or lived where they wanted to. Remember the back of the bus craziness. This all happened in my lifetime.

Thank God things have gotten better of course. I just dont want us to forget what happened not to long ago.

America is a baby on this planet. Not even 250 years old. That's a smidge in time.

And the wonder that is America is how fast she's grown up, matured, recognized human rights for all it's citizens.

There are so many places on this planet where other people are denied basic rights that we take for granted, live under such oppression and truly extreme poverty and despair, I think this young country has come a long way for really still being a "infant country" on this planet.

That's not to excuse the transgressions of the past in all her growing pains, not at all.

But it's to keep things in a true historical perspective.

For the many atrocities against humanity yet to come.

This nation of states started as an experiment in hope and humanity and freedom. There were and still are good men and women that have the intelligence and humility to recogise our failings along the path of freedom. The state of humanity at the time of our countries birth was what it was...Slavery...genocide...religious persecution... It is amazing we got off to any kind of a decent start at all..or even succeeded in our revolution. Most of the residents of this newly stolen land were satisfied being subjects of the English crown. The Declaration Of Independance, The Bill of Rights and the Constitution were radical documents with no precidence in human history. Sometimes we live up to this inheritance and sometimes we slip backwards as we carry this banner upwards to the top of the mountain for the world to see us as the best hope ...the best example. There is good evidence we have not let humanity down entirely. We have the statue of Liberty. There isn't another gift from one foreign land to another acknowledging that we ...in thier eyes have the right to carry the torch for humanity. In spite of our imperfect journey we still carry the light for the world. We can always do better....And we always will.

The people who say things like, "God DAMN America!!!!" when speaking of the issue of slavery seem to conveniently forget a shitload of Americans died to free slaves and for their civil rights and to save this country from itself. They seem to forget that there are Americans who push back when some asshole thinks it is okay to tell a racist joke just because there are no non-whites around.

I say, "FUCK YOU" when you ask ME to apologize for slavery. But then I don't ask for thanks for fighting for what's right, either. I just do it.

And our progress is evidence there are a lot more people like me than the ones you want us to apologize for. Go ask them to say their sorry. And when they kick your teeth in, I'll be here to back YOUR sorry ass up.

First Nations were slave traders of their own people and owned many Africans.

There were Free Blacks who had slaves.

The Brits first shipped over street urchins some as young as 5 years of age, prostitutes and gypsies in the 1600's before they got into the African slave trade.

Hell's bells Cromwell had troops kidnapping Irish for Virginia and the Barbados.

There were slave holders north and south. The biggest slave ships were out of the North East.

History isn't just black and white nor is it just Democrat vs Republican. It's complicated.

Just caught this about Ward Churchill. The guys been parading as an Indian for years. Rocky Mountain News checked out 142 ancestors and not one was Indian.


At various times, according to press reports, Churchill has described himself as Cherokee, Keetoowah Cherokee, Muskogee, Creek and most recently Meti.

In a note in the online magazine Socialism and Democracy he wrote, ''Although I'm best known by my colonial name, Ward Churchill, the name I prefer is Kenis, an Ojibwe name bestowed by my wife's uncle.''

In biographical blurbs, he is identified as an enrolled member of the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokees. But a senior member of the band with access to tribal enrollment records told Indian Country Today that Churchill is not listed. George Mauldin, tribal clerk in Tahlequah, Okla., told the Rocky Mountain News, ''He's not in the data base at all.''

According to Jodi Rave, a well-known Native journalist and member of the Mandan-Hidatsa-Arikara Three Affiliated Tribes, Churchill was enrolled as an ''associate member'' of the Keetoowah by a former chairman who was later impeached.

The one other known member of the same program, since discontinued, was President Bill Clinton. Rave said that she made this discovery as a student in a journalism class at the University of Colorado. She was also in a class taught by Churchill. When her article came out, she said, he dropped her grade from an A to a C minus.

Suzan Shown Harjo, a columnist for ICT who has tracked Churchill's career, said that aside from the in-laws of his late Indian wife, he has not been able to produce any relatives from any Indian tribe.

He also took Thomas E. Mails " Winter Attack" basically mirrored it and claimed it was his work. He printed 150 copies of it. Sold and had it up for sale on line. E bay.

Then there is research misconduct. The guy's been a con man for decades.
