I have always given Trump credit for the economy while he’s been president. He was able to maintain the trends in growth rate ( just a little slower ) and job creation ( just a little less) that we had under Obama. He gets credit for that.

He did so while causing unnecessary trade friction, giving the wealthy a huge tax cut and exploding the deficit. All to his credit.

On the economy. It was not “a great economy” before Covid-19. It only seemed great. It wasn’t great back in 2007-8 either. We were due for another crash. CV-2 pricked an artificially goosed asset bubble. But it is also a serious warning from Mother Nature of how vulnerable we are, despite the trillions we spend on our “defense” budget. Our government deficits, our negative balance of payments, our fiat money, Wall Street dominance over Main Street, our deadlocked politics, our incredibly arrogant super-nationalism, all were signs that our financial dollar-based empire was overextended.

The arguments over how to deal with CV-2, who to blame for it, tend to disguise the economic reality I mention above. They take the focus off the vulnerability of our system.
