I think you miss the point. Whats exeptional is the Idea of America, Including the framework that the founders set up. They were intelligent enough to know that a government needs to be self limiting to avoid eventual tyrany. The Idea of America where all men are equal and posses rights that are not given or taken away by men,... that is exceptional in world history. Whether or not you think America has lived up to its ideals is irrelevant, because the bar is set there to strive for.

As an employer I could fill the servers that support this forum with stories of college graduates who came to us with no means to write a cogent report. Engineers who have virtually no means to do their job without a laptop computer. Put a slide rule in front of them and they might as well be looking at a dinner plate.

Set them on a project and they have absolutely no means to communicate with other disciplines or vendors... Not too terribly long ago a woman applied for a managerial tech position. She had a MASTER'S DEGREES. The kid who was interviewing her ended up taking the interview over lunch. She was hot, so... he went the extra mile... anywho, as they were leaving, he picked up the tab and in making conversation, he jokingly handed her the check and a fifty and asked her how much change he should get. He was laughing so hard when he told me about it, that I was almost sure he was about to get himself fired for hiring here... but I'm proud to report that he's still with us and she was given the opportunity to seek work at a company which was better suited to her unique skills. Which for the record, was 'a strip club'.

I will not hire a person for any executive position who is under 30 years old. And that is because by that time, their former employers have already invested in supplemental education, to teach them to read, write, add and subtract. 30 YEARS OLD.

I feel like the idea of America's exceptionalism is inextricable for many people, largely conservatives, from patriotism. It's not really about America being objectively the best, it's about pride in your country. It's just rooting for your team. "Seahawks are the best!" "America is an exceptional nation!"
