Because this is an extraordinary decision. The credibility of the court will be at stake if they split by partisan lines. They know it's critical that whatever they decide it must appear to be a definitive an unquestionable decision.
If you'd read the transcript of the hearing, you'd know that they completely debunked Trump's attorney's arguments. They went on to grill Colorado's attorney because they needed to make every conceivable challenge so that the Colorado attorney could debunk every argument and that it would all go on the record.
The fact is, the Fourteenth Amendment, Section three was never new to SCOTUS. They are all extraordinary Constitutional scholars - and every one of them knew by the afternoon of Jan. 6, 2021, that Trump could never hold office again. The hearing last Thursday was just a formality.
