I heard that garbage in the late '80s when Wally World was contemplating building a store in Steamboat Springs...All the know-nothing naysayers were saying that it would be the doom of Lincoln Avenue, the main commercial drag....Well, it wasn't.

Time for the economic ignoramuses and outright haters to shut their bullshitting yappers.

I have seen it time and again..its happening right here in my town I live in...several places are going or have gone out of business since the super wal mart was built.

They deserve to go out of business. Small stores sell cheap, shoddy, merchandise at vastly inflated prices. When a Wal Mart opens, what happens is that it becomes an anchor store for other businesses that open right next door. The businesses that close are the junk shops and mom and pop grocery stores that sell stale merchandise and wilted vegetables. Since these small stores have a geographical lock on customers, the owners usually don't treat the customers very well. One convenience store owner in the inner city found it necessary to shoot a 14 year old dead for shoplifting a bottle of orange juice.

People who live in the inner city, in depresssed areas, have been complaining about these stores for many years. They must buy crap from people who hate them, or travel long distances to get something decent. Yet, even so, it is possible for a small store to successfully compete with Wal Mart. They just have to work harder and find a new business model. They can't sell the same stuff WalMart does and charge three times the price that WalMart does.

What DC doesn't need is a monster like WalMart that opens up in town, closes down the competing stores..and provides 1800 "jobs" lost from the places they closed down at lower wages and no benefits placing a greater burden on government resources.

Back in the days of yore, when you went to a general store, there was a counter at which you told a clerk which goods you desired. The clerk then went into the stock and fetched those items for you.

Then one day, some genius named Frank Winfield Woolworth decided to let the customers enter the stock area and pick out items for themselves. And as it turned out, they often selected more items than was their original aim when they left home that day. Woolworth made a gazillion dollars.

Woolworths destroyed the old business model. Many an old business went under, and Woolworths became the biggest chain store in American history.

I'm sure many of the whiners in this topic today are descended from those who resisted the superior Woolworth's business model with all their might.

And now Woolworths has been superceded by an even better business model.

My city voted down a Wal Mart last year, would have given jobs to 800 people in one of our poorest neighborhoods. There are two other Wal Marts on either side of town, but not close enough for these people. Given that my city is majorly liberal, I was not surprised. Turns out as it may, that Liberals wish to keep people poor and reliant on the government instead of on their own effort. I find that to be pretty sad in earnest. Wtf liberals? Just wtf are you thinking? You want to fight poverty by encouraging it. How does that work? You encourage independence by causing dependence. Seriously, what the actual fuck people?

I have seen it time and again..its happening right here in my town I live in...several places are going or have gone out of business since the super wal mart was built.

Several horse and buggy businesses went bankrupt when cars became affordable.

Several buggy whip manufacturers went out of business when there was no more need for buggy whips.

Several auto manufacturers went out of business when other car makers made better products at lower costs.

Several retail outlets - big and/or small - closed when some somebody else offered more for less.

There are no more 8-track tapes, 33rpm vinyl records, dial telephones, no more ice boxes using actual ice saved from last winter, no more liberal radio talk shows and no more useless and expensive stores and items that nobody wants.

Just as there are no more dodo birds, passenger pigeons, dinosaurs, wooly mammoths and small pox virus.

By and large, most changes - except for the moral ones - are benefiting everybody.

Those mom and pop stores that were replaced by Walmart should learn by the example of the minority owners of stores that were destroyed by loving and tolerant other minority in Los Angeles after the Simi Valley decision.

Like it or not, Walmart is here to stay, providing good - if not great - merchandise for reasonable prices. Granted, that merchandise was made in China, but only because greedy unions forced companies to escape socialist greed, or burocratic oppression.

Based on complaints of overcharging and poor service from small stores in Inglewood, WalMart applied to open a store there. The unions sent out thousands of people to march in the streets complaining and WalMart scrapped the plans. Instead they opened in nearby North Redondo Beach where the residents of Inglewood came to shop.

These kinds of practices by unions can be stopped. They were stopped in Chinatown Los Angeles where there were few general merchandise stores and no major grocery stores. The unions again sent in thousands of protesters (mostly black) paid to oppose the opening of the WalMart store. Here it ended up differently. The paid protesters were met by thousands of residents of the Chinatown district ready and able to stop them. The WalMart is opening as planned.
