Walmart is being singled out. The government is trying to force Walmart to pay a higher wage than what that same government has established as a minimum wage!

Please explain.

What magical properties do the dollars paid by Walmart possess which require more of them be paid out than has been established by law for everyone else?

Walmart employees (excuse me..associates) having to use food stamps and emergency rooms?

So, no target or k-mart anywhere in the country has employees on food stamps or using the emergency room?

So you mean to say that no minimum wage job in the country has a single employee on food stamps? And not a one of them uses the emergency room?

But what the hell, they provide cheap merchandise that isn't made in the US and the inferior merchandise made cheap so it's longevity is nice and short. That guarantees Walmart repeat business so they can sell more crap that doesn't last.

How does WalMart's pay policy contribute to the era of flat wages, and union stores which pay exactly the same as WalMart don't. Given that by having to kick in union dues, the actual take home pay of the WalMart worker is actually more than that paid to unionized stores?

How is the government responsible for the manufacturing base moving offshore? Did they tell all of the clothing retailers "You must get your good manufactured in China or Bangla Desh"? No they did not. Did they tell corporations to sit on billions of dollars while sending American jobs overseas?

And yet if manufacturing was on the rise in the US, you'd be the first to say that private enterprise made it happen, not the government.

Our government has given tax breaks and entitlements to companies that offshore. It started in the 50s under Eisenhower, but really took off during the middle of the Clinton administration after the telecommunication upgrades and boom.

It went into overdrive during the Bush administration and he could have easily dealt with it.

The bigger impact on flat wages is lack of economic growth. When there is an excess supply of labor, wages suffer.

Our government has done far more to cause this flattening than any one business.

There isn't any economic growth because the consumer isn't spending.
Why isn't the consumer spending? Well with flat wages the working class has less and less expendable income. Considering 70% of our economy is driven by consumer spending, flat wages are killing our economy. Does government determine wages? NO!

The government's overreaching regulations and tax policies make U.S. labor for more expensive than just the wages. And ObamaCare isn't helping.

When the government enacts regulations that make U.S. labor far more expensive, and then drives up corporate tax rates to the highest levels in the world, jobs are going to be moved offshore (especially the ones that are producing goods for international markets).

I think that the DC city council has a lot to be proud of. They now require a living wage of $12.50 an hour. If a major employer doesn't wish to pay that, they can go somewhere else. The citizenry of DC can be proud of their city and the new requirements. They are willing to forgo jobs and the ability to provide fresh fruits and vegetables for themselves and their children at reasonable prices, to prove the point that 'big corporations' aren't going to exploit them.

For the poor on SNAP or WIC, without cars, they still have their local grocers who can ignore sell by dates and employ minimum wage workers or less than minimum wage illegal workers.
