International trade is not a controversial subject--who one might vote for President is, and the left made it that way.

We went through the same thing in the Kerry race. In fact, leftists went as far to suggest that we do away with voting and just pick a President using exit polls. So what are the similarities? Both candidates were heavily demonized by the left and the MSM. If you make people feel insecure or guilty about voting for Bush or Trump, it's likely that some people will not give you a truthful answer how they did vote.

Others of course just give false answers because they are annoyed by somebody asking them how they just voted. While I've never been polled (and would be happy to do it) I know people that have and said they gave the pollster the exact opposite answer of how they voted.

The bottom line is that exit polling is not a science. It's not indicative of anything. If people answer honestly, yes, it could give you a clue as to what the voting public thinks. If they give you false information, they will post that false information unknowingly.
