And of course, Gallup has actually asked about the legality of same sex marriage repeatedly. And they put support for gay marriage at around 60%

How may muslim allies do you suppose we lost today Syriusly? We had precious few as it is. Divorce is legal, however it is not recognized by the Catholic church, and if a couple wants to be married by the Catholic Church and one of the couple has been married before, yet not annulled or anything like that through the Catholic Church, they can and DO refuse to marry them. So, in your theory....the government could have forced the Catholic Church to marry this couple where one was divorced...but guess what, the gvt can't force churches to do anything on this issue...some Churches may choose to marry same sex couples and some or probably most all, would choose not to, and they, (congress) can't write a law that would leave them out of NonProfit organizations, or specifically a law that leaves them out of Not for Profit organizations that get their tax exempt status.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof....

The Solicitor General responded, ‘it’s certainly going to be an issue.’”

and the ruling in the Bob Jones U case was specifically for educational institutions...

The Court made clear, however, that its holding dealt "only with religious schools—not with churches or other purely religious institutions."[2]

There are many sides to this divide. Muslims have their own. The one thing that is common to all sides is that the divisions have gotten so wide that we just don't care about one another any more. That's what's getting worse every day. A slow but inexorable alienation in a fractured American public.
