The federal government does overstep it's authority a lot, but without it, the US as a nation, does not exist. Each state would be a separate nation in and of themselves. It would also mean that federal programs such as social security, medicare, and medicade woulc likely be shut down since the vast majority of states do not have the funding to sustain them.
