The story is about possible upcoming changes. 5 year olds are incapable of grasping or understanding such topics. And I defy you to provide ANY example of teachings in the public that currently preach hate.

I just think it's stupid for the New Yorker to do that because Bert and Ernie have never been shown to be anything other than buddies who don't appear to have ANY sexual orientation. Why would anyone get the idea that just because they live together they're gay?

Since one is born with a particular sexual orientation, it is not inappropriate to introduce same sex relationships to children in the same way that it is not inappropriate to introduce opposite sex relationships to children. We are not talking about sex education here. We are talking about human relationships.
