No, Sarah, you're not as much of a scientist as Bill Nye

He graduated from a school of engineering. That makes him more of a scientist than you.

Um, no , it doesnt.

There is a huge difference between a scientist and an engineer.

Scientists develop and test theories in the lab for publication.

Engineers do real things in the real world.

Bill Nye is less an engineer and more of a 'entertainment personality' like Rush Limbaugh instead of an actual engineer anyway.
Point is he is more of a scientist than Sarah because he actually has a degree in engineering which requires learning science. He is a scientist entertainer, not a research scientist, but a scientist nonetheless. Whereas Sarah is a politician and a sports journalist.
Thats like saying that Sarah is 'more pregnant' than Nye.

One is ether a scientist or one is not and Nye is not a scientist and I dont think he is really an engineer any more either.

His authority to endorse Climate Change is no better than Palins is.
Climate change doesn't need anyone to endorse it any more than evolution or gravity needs someone to endorse it. It is a fact. Bottom line is if he can make a valid argument, it is valid regardless of his credentials. But Sarah was talking about him being no more of a scientist than she is which is false because this guy has spent his career teaching science whereas she is a politician and a sports journalist. Get it?

Teaching so-called "science" doesn't make you a scientist. I had "science teachers" in high school. In most cases, I knew more than they did. They often said stuff in class that was just plain wrong.

This is why you don't show up at these events if you are educated. It is like going to a 'debate' with Flat Earthers and saying both sides have their argument.

No, they don't.

“There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.”

Has the Bill Nye fella ever claimed to be a scientIst himself? When looking up the word "scientist" the definition seems to be somewhat broad. There is nothing in those definitions from various dictionaries that declare a scientist must have specific educational credentials.

Nye has been given at least four Honorary Doctorate of Science Degrees from four prestigious Universities. Not just Honorary Degrees, but specifically, Doctorate of Science Degrees. That means at least four Universities have recognized Nye as an expert in science, overwhelmingly meeting the definition of a scientist as an "expert" in science. They conferred the name scientist on him, not he himself. He seems satisfied with being called just "the science guy".

So, what makes Palin or the posters in this thread qualified to change the technical and accepted definition of what a scientist is? How are they qualified to dispute the dictionary definition and four major Universities?

That is quite an accomplishment. I'm sure Stephen Hawking doesn't even have four honorary degrees.

Are you saying other people don't have a right to express contrary opinions on anything. I'm not saying you have to agree with what someone else says but it just seems like you want to round these people up and put them in jail just because they don't agree with everyone else. You need to calm down a little bit. And no democracy, since everyone can participate in it, means that even flat earthers and global warmers have some influence in the system since they can vote and have the opportunity to convince others that they are correct.

I agree and now is the time to do it. I think that the government should sponsor a 1 billion dollar contest to find the most feasible alternative.
What is wrong with nuclear power?

What is wrong with liquid salt reactors that run on Thorium?

What is wrong with using coal and advanced scrubbing systems?

The problem with nuclear are problems we can live with I suppose. Ignoring what happen at Chernobyl and Fukushima. Chernobyl because it was a plant that had a bad design and people went out of their way to make the disaster happen. Fukushima? Not so easily dismissed. What can be learned is that risk can be minimized with proper management. One plant did fairly well in responding to the disaster, the other not so well and the effects will be with us for a very long time.

To say that nuclear power is pollution free is wrong. All nuclear station release radioactive gas and water into the environment just as a result of its operation. The saying is, "dilution is the solution."

The next problem is that nuclear stations all create the most hazardous substance known to man and the US has done nothing to address this long term issue. Yucca mountain was just about ready until president know nothing shut it down wasting BILLIONS of US dollars. Now the spent fuel will be stored on site. How much safer is that then to have it buried deep below the surface in basically stable geological sites?

The price of energy right now is putting pressure on the electrical supply industry. This is when we are in real danger when companies try and cut back on maintenance and operation expense. Much like what happened at the David Bessie plant.

Another problem is the age of the plants. The majority are now operating beyond their designed life. Through testing, Nondestructive and otherwise, it has been blessed by engineers to do so. But with the drive for shorter outages the NRC needs to ensure that companies keep up the very expensive testing.

So, in my opinion, we need a strong NRC. We need plants to prepare Earthquakes and other natural disasters. Nuclear power needs to be played by the rules. After Fukushima American nuclear industries took the lead and have done everything they can to reduce the risk of loss of cooling. I listen to a discussion about what one nuclear station was doing and at the end I asked, what if the dam below the station breaches and the pool of water that the plant uses is no longer there? After a long pause, it was said, "engineers have told us that could never happen." Fukushima should have taught us, that never can happen.

He was the star of a show called "Bill Nye the science guy" and he did profit quite a lot from this deception. Did he actually get his 'honorary degrees' before his show? You are saying his honorary degrees make him qualified to call himself a scientist but did he get those honorary degrees before or after his show? I think he should admit his deception and say he was not a real scientist.

OK, but what difference does it make when he got the honorary doctorate degrees. It was before Palin made her comments. And how do you dispute the fact that he fits the definition of a scientist according to the formal dictionary definition?

Apparently Nye got his nickname by being a comedian, how appropriate.

Here is a little bio on him: http://www.biography.com/people/bill-nye-20950589#early-life

After attending the private Sidwell Friends School, Nye enrolled at Cornell University, where he studied mechanical engineering. Upon earning his Bachelor of Science degree, Nye went on to begin his career at The Boeing Company in Seattle, where he would live for many years. Nye developed a hydraulic pressure resonance suppressor that is still used in the Boeing 747.

Entertainment Career
Nye got his start in comedy after winning a Steve Martin look-alike contest, and went on to work as an engineer by day and a stand-up comic by night. He eventually quit his day job and became a comedy writer and performer on the show Almost Live. It was there that he earned the nickname "The Science Guy."

And this is an example of the classic Climate Change Alarmist skipping any discussion of the merits of the case and just going straight to actual ad hominem (dismissing arguments due to who says them instead of addressing the facts) and finishes with a strong dose of elitism.

Wow, even a quote from Asimove, a science fiction writer. Maybe he could have done a better job with 'Climate Change" theory?

So he is still doing comedy; nice.

It fits the definition of scientist, which only means a person studies science and is an expert. If you disagree he is a scientist you have to provide an accepted definition of what the word scientist means. Sarah Palin is not a qualified person to invent a new definition for a word. Four Universities have opined that he is an expert in science which means he fits the definition of a scientist.
Why do people go to such weird and extreme ends to justify stupid comments made by Palin?

Whatever.

What dictionary are you studying? He did his show claiming he was a scientist when he wasn't. He didn't even have his honorary degrees by then.
