Deep inside the bowels of Texas, a constituent asked Joe Barton (R) to work with Jackie Speier (D) to sponsor legislation combating violence against women.

“Given your voting record opposing legislation protecting women from violence, will you make a commitment to us today, make a promise that you will reach out to Congresswoman Jackie Speier and work with her to see this bill successfully through Congress?” the man said.

Barton explained that he voted against the bill because he believes violence against women is a “state issue, not a federal issue.”

The answer earned the congressman boos from the audience.

“Violence against women, that’s a national issue!” one member of the audience shouted. “That’s an issue that impacts everyone everywhere, not only in this country, but everywhere!”

“You, sir, shut up,” Barton snapped, pointing his finger at that man.

The command, however, had the opposite effect on the audience.

“You don’t tell anybody to shut up!” the constituent shouted back. “You work for us!”

This is why you NEVER vote Republican, folks.

Republicans are empowered to openly oppose the people under the new Trump regime

He should not be allowed to speak to people this way. His job is to listen to people and he has set aside his right to talk this way when he ran for office. He is a wimp, coward, and obviously ignorant of the issues. Who elects people like this?

Conservatives. They love electing people who they know will abuse them. That's why they elected Trump.

Someone else's take of the situation:

The "shut up" came when a gentleman asked a question, crowd didn't like the answer, and he was trying to shout over a chorus of boos. I believe Rep. Barton was embarrassed by it and it was not representative of his attitude as a whole. I know if I had been in his shoes I would have said much worse. FYI, I did not vote for him, don't intend to vote for him but this should not be a "gotcha" moment to used against him as representative of how his town hall went.

WATCH: Texas GOP Rep. Barton Tells Man to 'Shut Up' at Heated Town Hall

So it seems his shut up was more at the crowd in general when he was trying to reply back and forth with this guy.

And unless you want to make domestic violence a federal crime to be tried in federal courts, It IS a State issue.

I want my federal government to handle federal issues, not issue feel good legislation.

If you like your plan you can keep your plan, period.

We have to pass the bill to see what is in it.

Clinging to their guns and Religion.....

Nice try. He says you SIR shut up. He was addressing one man in particular. Do you know of any "crowd in general" named "sir?"

Idiot.

No one gives a shit what you want.

Was he saying shut up to the guy asking the question, or a guy yelling and booing with the crowd?

You have a vague point in a general direction, nothing more.

He should have kept his mouth shut and let people speak. Just take it.

Like all those progressive snowfucks outside of conservative speaker's events?

And if he just "took it" you fucktards would say its "an example of the pussyness of the said republican congressperson"

It's not about the content for you twats, its about the gotcha moment.

Again, dipshit, note his usage of the word "Sir." Fucking moron.

Violence against women is legal? When did that change?

Again, you drooling idiot, he works for his constituents, not the other way around. So yeah, that means he's got to show them some goddamn respect -- a foreign concept for a conservative fuckboy like you.
