This is America, speak English!

MaryL, you are very naive if you think anyone is "excusing" bi and tri lingual in America.

I am white bread American born and I watch and read telamundo, Univision, Hispanic Times.

Telenovellas are awesome, girl: partiuclarly the old time all time great Amigas y Rivales.

Stephanie tries to emulate the Evil Roxanna but fails big time.

Anecdotal hearsay. After having Mexicans ram their holier than thou culture down my American English speaking throat, it ticks me off no end to read all the excuses for them not acclimating.

Immigrants from Mexico have and are assimilating and, everyone who has encountered Mexican culture as "holier than thou" raise your hands. Nobody? Yeah, didn't think so. You're projecting your bigotry, bitty.

I knew a women who was standing in line at a store, all the sudden security came up to her and, when she finished her purchased escorted her to her car. Earlier, while shopping two Asians men were overheard by an undercover security guard who also spoke Vietnamese, that the two were going to car Jack her and rob and rape her.

There is the issue of security that is seldom spoken of.

Considering the far, far, far greater number of violent crimes that are planned, whispered about, and carried out by native English speakers, there doesn't seem to be a larger point behind that example.

Whispering? These two could boldly plot in front of everyone.

That's my point. The language made no difference but to get them caught whereas native English speaking criminals would have plotted sotto voce.

That is not the case.

Yes it is, very much so. It is one way people in other countries identify someone as American, because that person only speaks English and expects everyone else to speak English. This is a universal joke about Americans.

No, it's not "a universal joke." Many countries have signs, maps, menus, etc. in English because it is such a prevalent language internationally. People in many countries are happy to run into a native speaker of English because it gives them an opportunity to practice the English they have learned while demonstrating generosity and pride in their country to a foreign visitor. So no, the pretentious assholes you may run with are not "universal," but English is by now quite widespread.

And before you bother, the fact is that many Americans attempt to learn something of the language before and/or during their travels. Your anti-American attitude and stereotyping are the real jokes here.

As if you've ever been to a foreign country, LOL.

I had some respect for you once. Not ever going to read any of your following post ever the same. Really....

The image below I just saw on Facebook I think is classic. In my speeches I talk about the one language in America, the English language. Although with my father I speak Lithuanian in public. I am sure we can all argue about which language should be "official" in America and I'm sure one can say there needs not to be an official language, but what if there were 20 languages to contact IRS and you had to wait through 20 options to press some number for English. I don't think anyone can really argue that English is the most popular language in the world and is the easiest to learn. And I understand that for legitimate reasons America is also hated and many people do not speak English as a protest, however, I also believe that those who CAUSE for America to be hated are the ones who create conditions to encourage different languages, conflicts, controversy, they are the ones who set up these things "press 1 for English, press 2 for spanich, etc. I believe that with a true leader in America, he would be able to make a change for one common language without offending any minorities or other foreign speaking people at all.

lol...can you imagine the native Americans saying that to Italian Christopher Columbus?

i have to agree.....i have had many a foreigner living at various times on my route and they used to enjoy talking....they said its good practice and English is a desired language in their homeland.....so i guess its how you look at it....a lot of American culture is every where.....

A lot of American culture can be see in quite a few places, but it is far more resented than you imagine. I've sat around the dinner table with people from other countries, people who have become friends and feel they can speak freely around me, and they resent that American culture has seeped so much into their culture. They resent it.

i am sure many do....but at the same time no one has to embrace anything......

We are all speaking English here if we want to be understood. Now, if I wanted to go "back to England" , even they have immigrant issues. And, ironically, the troubles in Ireland (that lasted over 250 years) ended because of immigrants from Africa, not some overreaching principals.

Mexicans ramming their holier than thou culture down your throat?.....you mean food?.....you dont have to eat it....

Oh, are you trying to transition from ranting about killing people to applying for membership in the pretentious asshole club? Aren't you going to ask if I have a passport?

mods....please send this to the badlands.
Thanks.

Why?

English was a major language used by the white invaders of America.
The OP makes a valid point regarding racist attitudes in today's America, that totally ignores your country was built by illegal immigrants.

This is a valid political thread; much as many in America would love to lose their history.

It's a sin to acclimate, something to be ashamed of. Why is that? Because Mexicans are either too proud or too lazy. Is there a difference?

Why is it a sin to embrace our diverse cultures of America, MaryL?

I am so proud of all of our ancestors from First Peoples to western Europeans to West Africans and then the Irish and the Germans and the Asians, and then the Jews and southeastern Europeans and Syrians and Lebanese, and then the South and Central Americans and other Africans.

Good for all of us.
