In PA, state campgrounds keep the private campgrounds in business due to a pet and alcohol ban. The private campgrounds are usually nicer. The State campgrounds have the benefit of being in the heart of the action.

Our National Parks are nothing short of spectacular. Tens of millions of Americans use them every year and they provide a low cost experience on a not for profit basis. Selling off the more lucrative venues of the parks on a for profit basis will reduce access for common Americans. Private campgrounds are nicer but they can cost you $50 or more a night

The article even says that this is done in other parks. In Death Valley there is private land that has resorts. The government just runs the visitors center, maintains the roads, and maintains the sites/attractions.

its because you can't fire them if they fuck up. For certain things people need to be government employees, for others its far better to have the government provide high level management, auditing, and oversight, and let things be run by a contracted organization. That way if they suck, the government can get someone else to run it.

Plus the government doesn't have to worry about pensions or benefits, that's part of the cost of the contract.

Mass transit operations, road repair, DMV services, all can be contracted out.
